In Which I Am Frustrated A Bit
(But That's Okay!)

Creative types, is this you?

You wake up too late because you were up all night and into the dawn working on a fun new idea you had and you were super excited to be working on it, so you figured "this is fine, I'll just sleep when I'm tired!" Except then you realize you've woken up at lunch and you're still tired, but worse, your brain has way more ideas for you to work with, and you're even more wound up! And then it's suddenly night time because you couldn't do anything with all those ideas because they were all shouting over each other, but finally one hits you just so and you start working again, and you stay up too late again and you figure "This time I'll sleep, right?"

But you don't and it just keeps going...

No?

Just me?

Huh. Okay, maybe I should take a freakin chill pill lol.

So if you've been wondering what's up with me, it's that. I've been having an overabundance of creative energy, but only at the worst times, and only on projects that I know I don't need to be working on just now. Instead of finishing my Christmas Projects (again) I'm back on my nonsense of "What if I try this new thing?!".

Don't worry, I'm still getting plenty of work done!

It's just very difficult to focus on what I need to focus on and also get sleep.

It'd probably help matters if I wasn't so squirrel-brained...

Regardless, here's the plan for this week:

Tomorrow - work on projects

Thursday - hopefully the art goes smoother this week than it did last week

Friday - more projects

Saturday - still more projects, possibly (hopefully) light-gazing

Sunday - chill with partner & family

Monday - post progress on Mystery Project

Next Tuesday - projects & blather on here!

The weather this week has not helped my focus. We went from below-freezing with about an inch of snow to upper 40s-low 50s (around 7-11℃) and pouring rain. Sometimes I wonder if I'm part plant because I'm as easily distracted by rapidly changing weather systems as a delicate flower or something. I literally cannot focus if the weather isn't sensible!

Currently, I'm throwing red rounds onto the Mystery Project and hooking as fast as I can through some other projects for family. I hope I can do a supply run tomorrow at some point so I can finish some of the ideas I have!

That being said, it's probably gonna be an early night for me tonight. Several days of staying up past dawn and then getting up after 10AM (yes, that means I've only been getting between 4-6 hours of sleep the last few days) are really catching up with me.

You should now have something that looks like a hinged ring or a handle attached to an odd, pear-shaped pouch. Now we’ll begin the underside of the lid (this is going to be weird, I’m sorry).

Form a magic ring from the same color as you’ve been using. I use a double-magic-ring for added security but you can start this in the round however you like.

R1: ch3 (counts as 1^st dc here and throughout), dc 11 in ring, sl st to the top of the ch3 (12dc)
R2: ch3, fpdc in same dc, (dc in next dc, fpdc in same dc) around, sl st to top of ch3 (12dc, 12fpdc = 24st)
R3: ch3, dc in next st, fpdc in fpdc (dc in next 2 st, fpdc in fpdc) around, sl st to top of ch3 (24dc, 12fpdc = 36st)

Take your hook out of the disc you formed (which we will now refer to as the “Lid”), then choose a spot to attach it to on the weird flap/hinge part of the first piece (which we’ll now refer to as the “Body”). With the ridged pattern facing downward (towards the open mouth of the Body), insert your hook back through one stitch of the Body’s hinge/flap and back into the loop of the Lid. We will be making our stitches through the hinge/flap stitches and back into the Lid for this round.

R11: ch3 (pull the first loop all the way through the hinge/flap stitch to make your 1^st ch), dc in next 9 dc going through the corresponding flap/hinge stitches as you go; on the next stitch, do not go back through the hinge/flap stitch to make your fpdc in fpdc; (dc in next 10 dc, fpdc in fpdc) around until the last fpdc, which is basically impossible (if you figure it out, great!) so just fake it til you make it; sl st in top of ch3. (120dc + 12fpdc = 132 sts)

You should have something that looks a bit like a sand dollar stuck in a ring.

R12: ch3, dc in next 10 dc, fpdc in fpdc; (dc in next 11 dc, fpdc in fpdc) around, sl st in top of ch3 (132dc + 12fpdc = 144 sts)

R13: ch3, dc in next 11 dc, fpdc in fpdc; (dc in next 12 dc, fpdc in fpdc) around, sl st in top of ch3 (144dc + 12fpdc = 156 sts)

If you have the pattern (dc in the top of every stitch, fpdc in fpdc), then you can take this as wide as you like. With a crochet thread and a 1.9mm hook, I have my disc at 7.5" (19.05 cm) in diameter, and you can keep that going as wide as you want, because we'll be changing colors once we get it to our desired width!

I might go another 5-10 rounds (depending on my attention span lol) before my switch, but as long as there's some overhang, it'll work!

It still doesn't look like much, sure, but I promise we're making gains!

As for the gifts I'll be working on... I strongly suspect one or two of my readers are on that gift list, so I cannot post them until after the gifts are given and opened, but rest assured, I'm having a blast with them!

How is the Christmas Crunch going for you guys, by the way? Any Nightmare Project stories you have to get off your chest? This bulky baby is now as long as a twin bed is wide! That's an iPad under the center, and yes, that's my knee and laptop as well...

Loooooook at it! It's huge! And textured!

Literally my only concerns right now are the weight (wool is heavy), the texture (wool is scratchy), and how much wool I have left (uh... not much). This sock wool is probably discontinued, if I could even find it to begin with. I'm pretty sure this is a Jawool brand? But I bought it back in like 2014 so who even knows any more, right?!

Anywho, this shawl could probably stop growing right now and still be a very functional shawl, but I want to see how far I can push it (because of course I do). If you have any idea what this yarn is, feel free to tell me in the comments!

I should be back on Thursday with 3/4 of my Big Big Art Project 2021, but we'll see :P

I have continued work on my Secret Project this week and restarted an old one.

Once upon a yesteryear I tried to make the Magnificent Marge shawl from the Crochet Wench (you can look her up on Ravelry!) but had to give up for some reason. My brain don't work too good so I don't actually remember why? Maybe I wanted to turn my two balls of sock yarn into a waistcoat... which would never have worked.

Regardless, I'm making this autumnal MM scarf dangit! I'm gonna do it!

Fiber Monday - Working Towards Joy

 

In Which I'm Doing My Best :D

It's that time of year when everything I do or think or make or say is an effort towards making someone's holidays a little brighter, and you know as well as I do that it can be exhausting. I have been crocheting nonstop since 6:30AM and that's after about an hour of sleep because I'm a garbage human who may have serious insomnia and an addiction to really stupid YouTube videos. On the plus side, I have finished 2 whole projects - including the most mentally taxing one - and I've started on a commission I was given by a family member and... it's the size of an infant. I'm not kidding. I think I have enough fluff though, so that's not going to be a problem, and the supplies were all... uh... supplied to me.

That being said, I still have a bunch of snowflakes to finish sewing ends in on, soak in OxyClean with my Filet Crochet Panels, and starch (maybe), I have several small plushes to make, and I have no idea what I'm doing 99% of the time.

It's the most stressful time of year, folks, but it's still worth every moment of doubt and every small blister forming on the top of my pinky.

One of these days I should show you all how I crochet, because... I do not do it correctly. Everyone I see holds the hook and project in the same hand and the yarn and project in the other, but not me. Nope. For some reason, I literally cannot make it work the way I see everyone do it, so I hold the hook between my right thumb and middle finger and loop the yarn up over my ring finger like a block & tackle before running it up and over my pointer finger, using the pointer as the means for advancing the yarn.

The way I've described it makes no sense, but some day I'll show you, and you'll probably understand, even if you'll have no idea how that makes anything easier. I will say that I should probably look into a leather thimble for my pinky just based on how the yarn rubs it raw sometimes lol.

Also, I keep dozing while I write or crochet (had to rework one part of the commission four times because I kept nodding off, but now it looks 4x better than it did, so I can't quite complain.

Actually, this brings me to something I wanted to discuss with y'all about my crochet work. Since it is such a big part of my life, and since I really enjoy doing it, I was wondering if, after Christmas (it's already too late to ship anything out for the holidays with how awful the mail is backed up everywhere) anyone might be interested in commissioning anything from me? I'll work on doing some pricing on what I'm willing to do, putting together a catalog, etc, but I think that might be a good supplement to... whatever job I eventually find, and I'm already crocheting a bunch anyway, so why not?

I might get up the gumption to do art commissions, too, but I think I need a few more months practice on that. Don't want you to end up with a potato after you ask me for a dragon, after all lol!

So yeah, that's where I am today - working hard on some large pieces for Christmas!

In Which I Did More Work On the Bag

It's a nice, chilly day. The sky is pale blue, the trees are slowly browning from our unfortunate drought (of which we've had more drought years than fine ones in my memory...), and my toes are cold in their thick cotton socks. It's a crisp 60℉ (15.5℃) with 26% humidity. Perfection. I'm happy with this weather, though I still have that sense of unease that too long without rain brings. I'm not even an outdoorsy type of person, but even I can feel that something is off with the weather.

I spent this morning examining the insides of my eyelids, sleeping in until about 11AM, so I apologize for the lateness of this blog but I needed that sleep. I was beginning to feel the exhaustion of my insomnia in a very uncomfortable way - it felt like my body was bruising. I feel much better today. More settled. More myself. More human.

There was a short moment this morning, as my mother got home, where things got a little crazy, but it was in a good way. Our toaster oven hasn't been toasting properly for a few weeks now, so she's picked up a new one. The cat is thrilled lol.

The mass of yarn in my room is slowly becoming more organized, too! Thanks to the ball winder my awesome partner got me for my birthday, I've been taking apart the tangle of my horde and putting it into neat(ish) balls. I still haven't mastered the winder, so occasionally, the yarn will slip and coil around the top of the ball instead of actually winding properly, but for the most part, it's going well.

Also, my younger sister was awesome and surprised me with two balls of Red Heart's It's A Wrap: Rainbow yarn a couple days ago in both "Seaglass" and "Couture". They're awesome and I immediately started looking for shawl patterns for them. I didn't expect them to be such a loose twist (there really isn't any twist to them, it's a bunch of very fine threads that are all clinging to each other with static and hopes and dreams), so there's a bit of struggle with splitting, but once you have the rhythm down, the cotton/acrylic blend works really nicely and feels great in your fingers. I've already done one pattern repeat of a butterfly-themed shawl in the "Seaglass" and I'm planning on doing something a little more nocturnal for the "Couture" (maybe moons? Stars?).

As for that little yellow bag?

I really like the basketweave pattern on this, and despite the fact that the yarn ball is now the size of a tennis ball, I think I'll keep going. If I have to use the red sock yarn as a contrast for straps & closure, that's what I'll do lol.

Fiber Monday - Wafflebag

 

In Which Progress Is Waffled... er... made...

I'm a wee bit tired, as of late. I've been staying up too late, waking up later, and just generally feeling run down and sleepy constantly. I'm 99% sure it's because I'm moving around more during the hours I'm awake, but there's always the worry that it could be a hormonal response or worse - my depression creeping back in. Which would be weird, since this is the most hopeful I've been in a while! My future is open wide, after all!

So I distract myself from my brain not understanding how to person.

And I do that with two things: Entertainment and Work.

For Entertainment, of course, I read (I'm working my way through Dashiell Hammett's Red Harvest right now), I play video games, and I watch lots and lots of YouTube videos.

For Work, however, you've seen a lot of what I do. I'm writing a novel (which, let's be real, takes up 75% of my Awake Time because that's what I want my JOB to be!). I draw (both digitally and on paper). I crochet.

And Right Now, I Am Crocheting A Bag!

The bag I'm crocheting right now is done using a basketweave pattern, but because the word "basket" likes to hop out of my brain like a frog from a log, I end up calling it a Waffle Weave bag, despite Waffle Weave looking like this.

Currently, the bag is about 3.5" (~8.9cm) tall, and I'm debating whether to make it a proper bag or to convert it into some kind of zippered clutch. What do you guys think? Purse with straps or zippered clutch?

I'll let you know how I plan to complete this project (if it's a zippered clutch, I'll probably have to line it...), and you'll continue to see progress shots :)

In Which I Am Very Sleepy But I Did Do Some Work

It's another gray day here at the homestead, and everyone is in a nappish mood. The cat has claimed my mother's lap for a snooze, my mother has claimed her recliner and is yawning loudly downstairs. I'm curled up on my bed debating whether or not I'm tired enough to sleep in jeans. I think I may be.

I did a bunch of squats last night - 5 reps of 20!

My thighs hurt. Imagine.

I did my laundry this morning.

I added about 1" to the Downton Abbey Lady Sibyl Shawl I've been working on forever. I started a pair of shorts that might be too big. I started a bag that might be too small. I've started work on some lace that might be too complicated. I am making an amigurumi that might be too cute.

It's been a busy month.

It's only the 4th.

Tomorrow is the 5th, and I'm excited because it's both Cinco de Mayo and Taco Tuesday, and while I have 0 Mexican heritage, like most basic white bitches, I do love me some Mexican culture. I'll see if I can catch some lucha matches online tomorrow...

I moved about 30lbs of random boxes of crap to a different part of my room and I've been slowly organizing. I need to move things out of the way of my TV, but more on that tomorrow, lol.

Today is about the fiber arts. And I am still working hard. I hope you guys are all working on your projects too! I hear that there are new requirements for masks - 1 to 2 layers of tightly-woven cotton for the fronts, a layer of tightly-woven natural silk for the inside layer, try to include a filter pocket for either some HEPA filter bag bits from a vacuum cleaner bag or fold up some paper towel if you can. I added the Dinorar design to my Redbubble shop if you guys want to buy a mask from there with a lil dinosaur on it.

As for the projects I'm working on, I have to say, they're all going real slowly except for the amigurumi. Those tend to work up really fast, even if the patterns are more complicated than the one for the shrug. It's literally a 4 row repeat on the shrug. It should be so much faster than it is...

And don't even get me started on the blanket I set out on. It's going slowly because I can't read the chart very well. It's supposed to be a bobble chart, but I'm doing it in single crochet... so I have to translate while I work. And my math brain is broken.

But that's enough white whine. I want to hear how your guys' projects are going! Are you making masks for your family and friends? Are you making blankets? Vintage-style dresses? Potholders with inappropriate anatomy on them? Wall-hangings of famous artists mashed-up with famous monsters? Actually, I should do that some time.... Fright-a Kahlo (as the Bride of Frankenstein?) sounds like a fun piece to work on...
