In which I managed a drawing despite being deep in my Stardew Era again...

So I've been playing Stardew Valley again.

And I've been loving it.

My sleep schedule has not been loving this, though, because I keep staying up til 3 or 4am just trying to do one more run in the desert caves. I'm in the spring of year 2, Kent has arrived, and I won the second egg hunt in a row. I don't know if I'll win anything else lol.

As for art, though, I still managed to pull through and draw something!

A watercolor of a pale yellow peach with subtle pink blush lying on a pale blue tablecloth with a purple shadow under the peach. The background is a muted spring green. Both background and table cloth are solid colors with no discernable pattern to them.
"Peachy"; watercolor pencil on paper; 2023
[FOOD, VEGETABLE]

So there we have a lil peach on a lil table with a lil shading and I'm actually pretty pleased with it! I managed to create shading and highlight without making it look shiny (because, of course, peaches are fuzzy, not shiny).

I had a hard time with the shadow underneath (obviously) but I'm otherwise quite pleased with it! Sure, the color is more apricot than peach, but I promise I've seen peaches that yellow before.

At least it's not bubblegum pink, which it very nearly was. I saw the yellow I wanted. I reached for the yellow I wanted. I looked up to watch the cat come into the room for a little box time, and when I looked down at my hand, I'd picked up a very pink pink.

I honestly cannot remember the names of any of the colors I used except that I know I made use of the Peaches & Cream shade for the body of the peach and Magenta for the blush. Everything else was kind of snagged at random. I layered a cool gray with the spring green to bring down the yellow tones in the background, but the light blue of the tablecloth was solo.

I used a round brush for most of the piece, especially the shading and the peach itself. I used a 1/2" square brush for the background, swirling it in circular motions to improve the blending of the gray and green.

This was a fun little piece to do, and if you'd like to make any requests of me, you can do so via Ko-Fi - send me a lil donation with a message telling me what category you'd like me to work from (Animal, Vegetable, Mineral, Food, Dedbert, Location, Geometric, Word), and I'll post a piece based on that category!

For now, I'm going to go eat some homemade teriyaki chicken, watch an Italian dad make lentil soup, and probably sneak in some more Stardew before I go to bed lol.

In Which It Is A Transition Week
So I am Discombobulated

Oh boy do I get thrown off easily. I usually do my shopping (for cheap snacks and drinks) on Wednesdays, but yesterday it was pouring like a tap during Happy Hour in a dive bar in Poughkeepsie, so I stayed inside all day, hilariously tired (seriously I could not keep my eyes open for more than 20 minutes at a time), and ridiculously cozy (pajamas all the way, babies).

This meant that I had to go outside today, and today was, as the memes say, heckin wimdy. Gusts of like 35mph at time windy, in fact (that's 56,3kph!)

But I went out! In a tank top and a sweatshirt! And I was fine! Because I only walked to the nearby uphill-both-ways shops I go to on the reg and back, which is about a 1 mile round trip lol.

That only took me about a half hour total, I'm pretty sure, and when I got back, I cracked open a lime Jarritos and a bag of locally sourced potato chips (sour cream & onion!) and got to painting!

"Dream Bunny"; Watercolor and Micron; 2022

I'm really happy with how this little experiment turned out! I didn't draw anything, just started laying down little dabs of color with those brush pens I got a while back, then blending them out instantly with a clean water brush. I chose the colors at random using a number generator between 1 and 24 (which is how many colors there are in the set). I might try this again with my other sets and other animals!

A Dream Menagerie sounds nice, these days, doesn't it?

So that's this week's art!

I would chat some more, but I'm actually working pretty hard on the crochet projects I have right now, so I should probably get back to those...

Even though I really want to try to paint more dream animals...

;)

In Which I Played With Pencils & Water!

Today was miserably dreary. It rained all day, never got above 75℉ (23.9℃), and it felt like late afternoon as early as 11AM.

As you may have guessed, that wasn't great for my motivation.

Neither was my inability to get a good night's sleep, but that's on me for just refusing to try to sleep until after 3AM.

Despite all these factors, I managed to do some art!

"Rainy Cubes"; watercolor pencil on watercolor paper

For once, that photo isn't that out of focus, that's just the lines being softened by my water brushes!

I'm fairly satisfied with this study, though I also hope to layer every pencil on a larger work at some point. This was only about a dozen colors layered in different ways. I also look forward to doing a bubble art with these colors at some point!

Artistically speaking, I'm just not feeling it these days, sadly. I just don't have much energy right now. I'm hoping that I can get some mojo back by taking a walk tomorrow, but we'll see!

As things stand, I'll be happy to finally be able to focus on art and writing more. My legs finally stopped hurting today (they've hurt since Sunday!!!) and it was such a relief to be able to walk around the house without hobbling or feeling like someone took a baseball bat to my ankles.

I think that about covers my artistic life right now. I'm a little distracted by the fact that it's so foggy I can barely see across the street and everything is being painted a sickly mauve by the hidden sunset. It's a positively apocalyptic look. One that I can't deny is also very cool to look at.

That'll do it for me.

In Which There Is A Palette Update!

Hey y'all! I did some work on the Bonkbubble! I'm up to 30 rounds on it, hoping to get to 40 next week, and I have 8 new colors for you! I can tell the stragglers are going to be from the Arylide Yellow camp - there are spots of those colors so far away from the others that I have to zoom all the way out to see where they'll connect!

The colors I've found this week are:
  • Jaguar 23232A
  • Sand Dune 7D7168
  • Vivid Violet 7D4092
  • Finch 747454
  • Cerise EB416C
  • Wild Strawberry F83697
  • Mongoose AC8871
  • Yuma CEBA82
I'm pretty pleased with how things are coming along, especially after having to switch computers! The new screen is smaller than the old one, which makes it take a little longer than it did to get the outlines right on some of the bubbles. I may have figured out a workaround (at least for the outlines I already have!) but we'll see if it works long-term :)

I haven't sketched yet today, but I plan to. It probably won't be something worth throwing up on the blog next week, but I'll still give it a spin. I'm also looking at maybe picking up a desk with a built in drafting table. I have a desk, but it's... short. It's designed for a kid or young teen and my fat thighs just don't fit under it. It basically just serves as a night stand/junk storage, which is... honestly, junk storage is 2/3 of my life problems right there :|

So I'm looking for a nice desk that I can have a computer on one part and a drafting table on another. I hope I can find one that isn't obscenely expensive, but we'll see lol!

That'll about do it for me today - I need another cup of tea and maybe a walk in this lovely weather - it's currently sunny and only lightly breezy at 59℉ (15℃)! It even feels just about the way it is! When I had my coffee this morning, I watched the ducks waddle around next door and just... enjoyed feeling the sun and fresh air.

Yeah a walk sounds really nice :)

In Which I Have A Minor Update

I've been working on this bonkbubble piece forever, guys. I am really, really making progress (we're a good ways in, I promise!) but it still feels like this project is eternal.

I did, however, add a bunch of new colors! So here they are:

  • Cerise (DA3895)
  • Anzac (DBA64C)
  • Clay Creek (8F8655)
  • Charm (D883A3)
  • Zombie (D4E193)
  • Pharlap (A1807C)
I'm quite happy with these colors (even if Pharlap sounds... inappropriate, vaguely...)!

And poor Bone only has one shape left being outlined entirely in its own color - otherwise it's been mixed with various other tones at this point! And we have our first intersection of Aero Blue and Saffron (which resulted in Zombie)! I'm very eager to see just what the final color turns out to be, too, since everything else is being mixed in... weird quantities, to be honest. It's not as simple as "Colors A, B, & C all intersect, so the final color is an average of the three" - it's more like "Colors A + B bonked first, and their average is now being averaged against C, which they've bonked into while conjoined" and it's a lot of math.

Pretty simple math, yeah, but math all the same.

The averaging of colors is done this way:
(Color A Red Value + Color B Red Value)/2
(Color A Green Value + Color B Green Value)/2
(Color A Blue Value + Color B Blue Value)/2

So for Aero Blue + Saffron, that's:
R (191+234)/2 = 212
G (255+196)/2 = 225
B (241+53)/2 = 147

R 212, G 224, B 147 = Hex code D4E193, and when I plugged that into icolorpalette, it tells me that the common name of this Hex code is "Zombie", ergo, Zombie is between Aero Blue and Saffron.

If that made no sense to you, I apologize lol. It's half past midnight. I should really be asleep right now!

But I forgot that I needed to actually post the blog and not just do the bubbles :P

So that's my braindead art update - I am slowly progressing on this massive artwork (the canvas is currently 10k x 12k pixels), and I like the pretty colors :)

That'll do it for me tonight!

Wheeee! Colors!!!

I'm not done with the Big Bonkbubble yet (it's... huge), but I definitely made a lot of progress this week! Fifteen Rounds! (That means I expanded every single bubble by 15 pixels each direction) and I added a bunch of secondary colors as the bubbles have, well, "bonked" each other! It's been a while since I updated you on the colors I'm using, so I would like to give you the full palette so far:

  • "Jelly Bean" 287592
  • "Crimson" ED1537
The original palette was randomly generated on coolors.co

The secondary colors names were looked up via HEX on icolorpalette, which I found while just trying to look up the HEX codes on Google lol

I may have done 15 rounds this week, but that doesn't mean I'm done - I hope to do another few rounds tonight, in fact!

As for why this blog is being posted so late...

I honestly kept forgetting today was Thursday.

I'm not tired, I'm not exhausted, and I got plenty of sleep and feel fine, it's just that today really felt like a Friday.

I went for a walk today and everything (I'm usually a blanket fort troll on Thursdays in order to do more work)!

But here we are - several weeks into a digital artwork that's going to look... odd to say the least, but which I'm enjoying immensely :)

I can't wait to see it done!

That'll do it for me today, though - I have more bubbles to bonk and colors to mix!

In Which I Made A Sketch

Thursday again, and all I wanted to do today was sleep. I think I've had enough coffee to kill a small yak, but I'm very sleepy. I've been in relatively good spirits, however, so I managed to will myself to make a fun little sketch of the Four Pillars of Casual:

"Four Pillars of Casual"

The Four Pillars are, of course:
  • Coffee
  • Tea
  • Snacks
  • Books
That's supposed to be a book the coffee (left), tea (right), and English Muffin (center) are on top of lol.

I'm planning on expanding this idea in other mediums (markers, crayons, pencils, maybe even paint, digital) but for now it's just a little scribble. I even had the date wrong at first lol!

Despite my lack of motivation, I've gotten a little writing done today, too! Not... not much, but about a paragraph isn't too bad for someone who wants to sleep and eat popcorn.

I'm going to go back to my manuscript in a moment, but just wanted to update you on the bonkbubble piece I'm doing digitally!

I'm up to 22 colors now from my original 16, and my secondary palette may be limited, but it's still kind of pleasant to look at... except the first color which is a combination of Arylide Yellow and Purple Navy...

Secondaries:
  • A7A25E (167, 162, 94)
  • E48888 (228, 136, 136)
  • DB984A (219, 152, 74)
  • ED5A6C (237, 90, 108)
  • 34333E (52, 51, 62)
  • 777C47 (119, 124, 71)
I'm gonna go back to writing now, folks.
