Thursday Art Walk (Oops It's Friday)

In Which I Have A Minor Update

I've been working on this bonkbubble piece forever, guys. I am really, really making progress (we're a good ways in, I promise!) but it still feels like this project is eternal.

I did, however, add a bunch of new colors! So here they are:

  • Cerise (DA3895)
  • Anzac (DBA64C)
  • Clay Creek (8F8655)
  • Charm (D883A3)
  • Zombie (D4E193)
  • Pharlap (A1807C)
I'm quite happy with these colors (even if Pharlap sounds... inappropriate, vaguely...)!

And poor Bone only has one shape left being outlined entirely in its own color - otherwise it's been mixed with various other tones at this point! And we have our first intersection of Aero Blue and Saffron (which resulted in Zombie)! I'm very eager to see just what the final color turns out to be, too, since everything else is being mixed in... weird quantities, to be honest. It's not as simple as "Colors A, B, & C all intersect, so the final color is an average of the three" - it's more like "Colors A + B bonked first, and their average is now being averaged against C, which they've bonked into while conjoined" and it's a lot of math.

Pretty simple math, yeah, but math all the same.

The averaging of colors is done this way:
(Color A Red Value + Color B Red Value)/2
(Color A Green Value + Color B Green Value)/2
(Color A Blue Value + Color B Blue Value)/2

So for Aero Blue + Saffron, that's:
R (191+234)/2 = 212
G (255+196)/2 = 225
B (241+53)/2 = 147

R 212, G 224, B 147 = Hex code D4E193, and when I plugged that into icolorpalette, it tells me that the common name of this Hex code is "Zombie", ergo, Zombie is between Aero Blue and Saffron.

If that made no sense to you, I apologize lol. It's half past midnight. I should really be asleep right now!

But I forgot that I needed to actually post the blog and not just do the bubbles :P

So that's my braindead art update - I am slowly progressing on this massive artwork (the canvas is currently 10k x 12k pixels), and I like the pretty colors :)

That'll do it for me tonight!

Thursday Art Walk

Wheeee! Colors!!!

I'm not done with the Big Bonkbubble yet (it's... huge), but I definitely made a lot of progress this week! Fifteen Rounds! (That means I expanded every single bubble by 15 pixels each direction) and I added a bunch of secondary colors as the bubbles have, well, "bonked" each other! It's been a while since I updated you on the colors I'm using, so I would like to give you the full palette so far:

The Original Colors (HEX)
  • Aero Blue (BFFFF1)
  • Saffron (EAC435)
  • Wild Blue Yonder (B2B1CF)
  • Raisin Black (1E1E24)
  • Dark Liver (403F4C)
  • Opera Mauve (B37BA4)
  • Tumbleweed (D8A47F)
  • Dark Olive Green (47682C)
  • Viridian Green (0FA3B1)
  • Purple Navy (414874)
  • Arylide Yellow (DBD053)
  • Rose Madder (DB2B39)
  • Shocking Pink Crayola (F26DF9)
  • Imperial Red (FF0035)
  • Bone (D7CEB2)
  • Oxford Blue (0B132B)
The Secondaries - aka the second row of palette colors. I looked up the hex codes to find the names.
  • "Avocado" 8E8C63
  • "Mandy" EB6773
  • "Red Damask" DB7D46
  • "Radical Red" F53354
  • "Tuna" 34333E
  • "Shadow" 777C47
  • "Teak" B7966C
  • "Torch Red" F81E47
  • "Monarch" 850930
  • "Baltic Sea" 292831
  • "Affair" 7E4092
  • "Old Lavender" 795D78
  • "Monza" C20432
  • "Amethyst" B856C5
  • "Jelly Bean" 287592
  • "Crimson" ED1537
The original palette was randomly generated on coolors.co

The secondary colors names were looked up via HEX on icolorpalette, which I found while just trying to look up the HEX codes on Google lol

I may have done 15 rounds this week, but that doesn't mean I'm done - I hope to do another few rounds tonight, in fact!

As for why this blog is being posted so late...

I honestly kept forgetting today was Thursday.

I'm not tired, I'm not exhausted, and I got plenty of sleep and feel fine, it's just that today really felt like a Friday.

I went for a walk today and everything (I'm usually a blanket fort troll on Thursdays in order to do more work)!

But here we are - several weeks into a digital artwork that's going to look... odd to say the least, but which I'm enjoying immensely :)

I can't wait to see it done!

That'll do it for me today, though - I have more bubbles to bonk and colors to mix!

Thursday Art Walk

Art Walk? More like Art Block!

So I was being a bit optimistic in thinking I could catch up to where I was on my previous piece, but I'm getting there, slowly but surely. I don't have any progress to discuss because I haven't added anything new, exactly.

I did end up adjusting some colors - instead of having an overlap of 50% opacity colors and choosing the center tone, I now actually make an average between the RGB values of two different colors, which means my orange is more orange and my pinks are redder.

I also learned that I can highlight specific areas of color (specifically the ring around two different colors!) without the highlight spilling into any of the other colors by reducing the Tolerance to 10% from the standard 50%. This is especially important for the combos of Rose Madder/Arylide Yellow and Imperial Red/Bone.

I'll have more color updates next week I think, but I'm going to be making progress (proper progress!) starting tomorrow!

Very excited!

I also need to get this new computer hooked up to my scanner so I can scan physical drawings and show them off without my terrible photography "skills" getting in the way lol!

Hopefully you're all working on art (unless that stresses you out!), and hopefully if you have lost power you can find somewhere warm to be. I'm so sorry this crisis is going on out west and I hope it's over soon :(

Thursday Art Attempt 320

In Which I *TRIED* To Make Art

So you haven't seen many examples, but one of my favorite art forms is watercolor. I love painting with watercolors. I find it very relaxing, I love how dreamy the colors can be, and I really enjoy the process.

Unfortunately, I forgot to close my door today.

So I ended up with a "helper"

Evie cannot be around the watercolors when they're out, since they're not pet-safe, so I had to wait for her to decide to leave my room.

Guys, that was three. Hours. Ago.

She's still in here, wandering around, giving me death glares when things aren't to her liking. My allergies are acting up. I won't be able to finish this piece today :( BUT! I did get an undersketch done. Check back next week to see if I managed to finish this watercolor of a cityscape!

Now, a few extra wrinkles:

  • I haven't used this kind of watercolor paper before. I haven't had much luck with the paper tablets you can get at most stores, because I tend to work very wet, and that just... mushes the paper up. I prefer a good cotton paper like Arches or something. Still, this is what I found, and as far as practice goes, this should help.
  • It's been over a year since I painted anything. Hopefully I've still got it.
  • I don't know what colors to make this. It's a four-layer image: background of the sky, mountains, cityscape, and foreground of a park. I usually just do two layers (sky and city), so I'm not sure what colors to make things. Mostly, I need help with the foreground (do I just do darkened shades of what the actual park colors would be or should I go with a monochrome effect?) and the background (I know the top is black, but what should it fade down to? Is this black-to-purple, black-to-red, black-to-green?!)
  • I don't 100% remember how to watercolor paint properly, so if this comes out looking like garbage, we'll blame my poor practicing, right?
Regardless, I'm looking forward to getting back into watercolor again :)

What are you guys up to, art-wise?
