Filmic Friday 4: Pocket Ninjas

Title: Pocket Ninjas
Director: Dave Eddy
Date: 1997
Format: DVD? VHS? I think it was actually the world's worst DVD...

What even the heck was Pocket Ninjas.

None of this happened in the movie. They're normal kid sized. There are no props like this. Liars.

No, seriously, I don’t know what that was. It wasn’t a movie, that’s for sure. It made no damn sense and… wait…

Isn’t that the main actor from Fist of the North Star?!

Yeah, I think that's him...

Yup. Same guy.

And that’s Robert Zdar! He looks so happy! (Glad someone was...)

Annnnnnnd it's from one of the Zen Filmmakers as director.

That explains a lot.

If you want a better explanation than “they just suck and they made actors pay them to be in garbage,” then Google is your friend. I won’t waste my fingers trying to explain. Zen Film is stupid. And it sucks.

So, this movie, from what I could tell, was basically what would happen if Bulk and Skull were to make their own Power Rangers episode. It makes no sense, the characters are all rock stupid, and nothing is accomplished.

We were left with every interrogative echoing around the room by the end credits of this… thing. What had we just watched? Why were children suddenly ninjas in bad masks, and why was the main villain about 8 years old and one of two Asian actors, both of whom were villains? Who would even watch this, willingly? Where is the lighter so we can burn this? How did the girl character get her mask when they basically told us she couldn’t?

Wordless screaming was had by all.

Just so you don’t think I’m lying that a movie so bad I won’t review it exists, I present to you the IMDB page for Pocket Ninjas..

Which seemed to be about kids making shit up in a tree house about how they were all kung fu masters taking on a kid whose gang was being used to dump toxic waste and whose dad was Robert Zdar. There was a VR combat scene. Somehow that wasn’t the dumb part…

Right. Just go out and Enjoy something.
It won’t be a Zen Film.
They cannot be enjoyed.

Thursday Art Walk 4

Since I posted the watercolor last week, I decided to go ahead and grab an old school project of mine to put up. When I was in college, wasting money I didn't have on an education that didn't seem to go anywhere, I had a few art classes. The best ones were the watercolor classes, but I enjoyed my other classes, too. This piece was from one of the other classes.

It's supposed to be one of the castle cities from the video game Secret of Mana, but from the side and at night. We were given a square of plywood or chipboard or something like that and a bucket of spackle and told to make some kind of relief. It was a lot of fun mounding it up and building support structures under the spackle. The painting was the hard part - since it takes so long for the spackle to dry, and since it cracks (a lot, if you're not careful), then the painting can take just as long, since you have to seal the spackle with a base coat (white), then lay your under-colors (black), and if your under color is too dark, then it takes forever to build up your over-colors. Then comes highlighting...

I'm most pleased with the water. That effect was both the most fun and the most fussy. I remember getting the spackle down and then looking at my hand, thinking "I wonder how this feels on my palm". I ran a hand across it and the waves seemed to just... appear. The perfect swirls and peaks were a joy to make. Painting them was a big old pain, though. You can see where I had trouble highlighting some of the shallower waves (the big white streak in the middle), but it was still really cool.

I'd love to do another relief like this some day. Now that I'm not a teenager anymore, I bet I could do better. It's probably been about a decade since I made that, now that I think about it...

Go out there and create something you enjoy, friends.

Wednesdaymania 4: Kurt Angle

I’ve been considering this for a while, but this week I would like to spotlight a wrestler. Since it’s American Independence Day, I figured it’d be wise to discuss a wrestler who has/had a patriotic gimmick, and since I don’t know that much about (and haven’t seen many matches with) Del Wilkes beyond his old (and shocking) drug habits (how is the man even alive), I’m going to go with someone who, somehow, is still wrestling.

That someone is Kurt friggin Angle.

He was a baby at this point, guys.

Kurt Angle is special among professional wrestlers in that his gimmick started out as just himself – an Olympic medalist in amateur wrestling. He came out in his US-themed singlet, he used a mouthguard in a time when no one else seemed to, and he suplexed people into the frigging sun. Seriously, he was the human suplex machine long before Brock Lesnar.

That is a six foot tall, 237lb man lifting a 6'2", 248lb man like he's nothing.

While he debuted as a Face (good guy), it was pretty funny how quickly everyone realized that all-American characters were really obnoxious and turned on him. While he was rocketed onto the main roster with mere days of training, he took to the crowd hazing and became a truly legendary Heel (bad guy). While some wrestlers might fight the crowd, disagreeing with them or turning into a comically evil person, Angle went the exact other way – he upped his baby-faced good boy attitude and played oblivious.

Kurt suffered a broken neck while wrestling even before he went pro, so watching him take moves can be terrifying, but somehow, he’s still going strong. He did end up leaving WWE in 2006 because he was working hurt too often, but then he immediately joined TNA, so… not gonna touch that one. The man held gold in every company he worked for. It’s like the second he touched the gold in the Olympics, he became addicted (and I’m pretty sure that there was more actual gold in the wrestling belts than in his medal) because we’re talking gold in the ‘96 Olympics and ‘95 World Championships for amateur wrestling, and a long list of championships in wrestling.

WWF World Heavyweight Title x2 (October 22, 2000 – September 23, 2001)

Total Belt Count: 21

I wish I could say that my favorite match of his was one of his submission-based matches against a spectacular foe like Shinsuke Nakamura or Brock Lesnar, but I actually like the most terrifying match he had.

The one where he almost killed Shane McMahon.

His boss's son.

The glass did *not* shatter the first couple times they tried this. Shane's forehead wound up looking like hamburger.

If you want that one, just check out King of the Ring 2001. It lasts almost a half hour. Owwwwwww.

During his current run in WWE, he’s living out a joke that pretty much everyone who was watching NXT was making at the debut of American Alpha. He’s pretending to be Jason Jordan’s father. Why is this funny? Because Jason Jordan has the same effortless amateur style as Kurt Angle. Also this:

Pretty close, yeah?

Unfortunately, WWE doesn’t have a sense of proportion with the joke and made it like something on a cut-rate soap opera, rather than something humerous…

Speaking of things that aren’t funny, if the 1996 Olympics sound familiar for some reason, then congratulations! You probably saw Foxcatcher and you know why I’m not devoting more time to the topic. We had depression hour last week. Not today, guys. Not today.

(For those not in the know, Kurt Angle was trained by Dave Schultz, who was murdered by the now infamous John du Pont. It was not a good. It was very not a good.)

So instead of leaving you on such a terrible note, I think I’ll leave you off now with a (hopefully embedded) video of Kurt’s theme song “Medal”. Which was apparently one of Sgt. Slaughter’s themes.

I should do a Wednesdaymania on Sgt Slaughter… and one on the Iron Sheik… Yeah…

It's true, it's damn true...

Go out and enjoy something!

Talk-About Tuesday 4

Most mornings, I get up around 9 and wander down to the kitchen for a cup of coffee. It’s not really coffee – it’s a sachet of Swiss Miss with a spoonful of instant Nescafe Tasters Choice – but I consider it as close to coffee as I get besides coffee ice cream. I’m not going to have coffee ice cream for breakfast, after all…

So I get my coffee, I pour in my half-and-half, and I wander back out to the living room to scrunch myself up comfortably on the couch and then immediately have to get back up to find out how far apart and how far across the house the tv and Roku remotes are. Remotes in hand, I’ll go settle back into my pretzel position on the couch and drink coffee while watching YouTube videos (lately, it’s been SpaceHamster’s playthrough of Dark Souls Remastered). It makes me wish I had a better computer and more money so that I could play some of these crazy games, like Dark Souls, Elder Scrolls Online, or something like that.

I’d be terrible. I suck at action games. A lot.

While I’m fueling my caffeine addiction, I generally start letting my mind wander to things I’ve learned this week. Which is what I’m going to write down here:

Sam the Keeper from Werewolf was totally on an episode of Unsolved Mysteries in the 90s, portraying a dude who probably strangled his crazy wife with a dog leash and then disappeared. He really looked like the guy, too (but not missing the same fingers). Also, he currently has a small press and is known as the “walking poet”. Neat guy :) Also the same guy in the Black Hole Sun music video.

There’s not very much in this world that gamers either a) don’t already know, or b) won’t find out quickly. If there’s a secret in a game, they’ll find it. It might take a few years, but they’ll find it eventually. Don’t leave personal information in games you develop.

Even really, really cool guys make really bad mistakes. Always run background checks on people you’re going to work for and with in wrestling. Actually, that might just be a good idea no matter what.

Writing is hard when you don’t have any time to write – try to give yourself time and space for writing.

I think that’s about all for this week, fellas, (and just as SpaceHamster eats a bunch of curse and dies hardcore) so I’m gonna leave you all here :)

Have a great day and
Enjoy Something!

Fiber Monday 4

Wow, guys. This was a rough week to be crocheting. It's been humid, and the last two days have been near 90F. The next few days will be, too. Fortunately, it was 67F when I got up this morning, which meant that I could actually do some work on the scarf!

It's kind of hard to tell, but the scarf has reached 16 inches in length! I don't know how long it'll get, but I just hope the stiffness of the fabric isn't permanent. Right now, you can kind of tell that it's got kind of a stiff texture by looking at the bottom right corner - the whole scarf warps like that. Hopefully, some time in the heat & humidity will help relax the acrylic, but it doesn't always work out that way.

In other news, I finished two other crochet projects this week - a little pink heart that I forgot to photograph before I gifted it to a very special lady, and a little monster for a very special gentleman. I actually did take a picture of the monster, and hopefully, the little lady will bring her heart by so I can take a photo later :)

You can't see it here, but there's a yellow hinge behind his head so he's super floppy!
Alright, folks, that's it for my yarn this week. Anyone else wind up with a chafed pinky finger while crocheting for hours? No? Just me?

Go enjoy something!

Survival Sunday 3

This is the story of my black ramen adventure.

A while back I found myself in possession of a package of black rice ramen noodles. I actually had two packages, but I’ve already eaten some of the first package – long before I decided to blog about food. As for this one, it’s been languishing in my S/O (Z)’s room. Z and I planned for a while what we were going to do about the ramen, so we had a bunch of ingredients on-hand for the experience, including some packages of miso soup, some eggs, some scallions, some nori & bonito, and some time. Not the herb, thyme, but actual time. We wanted this to work, dammit.

On the way back to the kitchen, we picked up some drinks – San Pellegrino hasn’t steered us wrong so far, and they had two flavors we hadn’t had before: Pomegranate & Orange and Prickly Pear & Orange. We’re both suckers for oranges, pomegranates, and cacti, so we hustled the cans back and got ready to roll on our black noodle soup.

I preferred the Pomegranate, but Z really loved the Prickly Pear!

The black ramen I picked up has no food coloring – that’s right. That rich black tone? It’s because it’s made from black rice! I found my ramen at a TJ Maxx, but you can definitely order it online, and if you live near civilization, you might be able to hit up an Asian market and find some. To be honest, I’ve never lived near specialty shops beyond the local wholesaler who sells bulk products mostly to restaurants (I’ve been known to buy the gallon cans of chocolate pudding, but that’s a gorge-story for another time :P).

I think this pack of 3 bricks was about $4?

Taste the forbidden goodness!

We started by getting the water up to a boil, chopping up the scallions/green onions and getting everything together in one place so that once the cooking started we could more easily assemble the bowls.

Bonito flakes are dried fish, so if you're vegan/vegetarian, you can skip them. They're pretty strong, too.

This is a bit deceptive because of the angle, but the bricks were pretty small and the eggs were pretty large regardless.

After the initial assemblage, I put the instant miso soup mix we had on-hand (it’s super cheap, guys – like $2 for a half dozen servings and it comes with dried tofu and veggies) into our bowls. We used the big bowls because that’s how we roll.

I promise that miso tastes much better than it looks.

Then I boiled the eggs until the yolks turned yellow and turned to ask Z to bring me the bowls, only to find that Z had remembered a key ingredient I’d forgotten: Frozen corn! It was already in the bowls by the time I tossed the eggs in to warm the corn and steep in the miso.

Eggs, miso, corn

And now the dehydrated bits from the soup! I love tofu & seaweed - great combo.

Here comes the kind of freaky part: the black ramen was placed in the still-boiling water to cook.

The froth is from the egg whites that didn't make the trip to the bowls. Also, we like to add some scallion to the water to soften up and flavor the noodz!

It’s freaky because it kind of turns the water a muddy, purplish black. If you’ve ever made black beans, it’ll be a familiar color.

I promise it's good, guys, I promise!

After the noodles had finished softening and heating through, we finished assembling our bowls. When the bonito hit Z's bowl, they started doing the iconic bonito dance, flapping in the steam for a brief moment before the bowl vanished before my eyes and Z disappeared into the dining room. By the time I got to the table, Z's ramen was ancient history, leaving behind only joy. When I sat down to eat mine, it was pretty clear why Z's had vanished so quickly - it was amazing! The ramen and broth had thawed the corn so that it was still cool, but it wasn't cold enough to be weird, and the cool corn helped offset the heat from the soup. 10/10 will eat again.

The tan bits are the bonito flakes, the black scraps are the nori!

My bowl, just before being transferred to the table

The yolk was still orange in the middle, but firm, and as you eat the egg, it crumbles into the broth and thickens it!

It’s pretty interesting to note that when the noodles are cooked, they turn more of a purplish brown. In fact, it looks an awful lot like some of the seaweed I’ve seen at the beach!

Speaking of the beach, it’s about 90 degrees in my room as I write this. About 75% humidity too. It’s not a pleasant day. I think I might go downstairs and eat some leftover rice cold.

RECIPE FOR BLACK RAMEN
You’ll need:
- black ramen (1 block/person)
- instant miso soup (1 package/person)
- eggs (1/person)
- frozen corn (about a handful/person)
- scallions/green onion (maybe 2/person, chopped how you like)
- nori and/or bonito flakes (optional)
- sesame seeds to garnish
- enough water to boil the noodles & eggs in

* ladle for stirring & serving
* pot for boiling water & cooking eggs and noodles in
* some way to get the noodles out (I used chopsticks, but anything you’d use to remove spaghetti with works here too. Same basic idea. Get noodles out)

1) Assemble your ingredients so they’re easy to grab. Seriously, if you get everything in one place it’s so much easier and faster this way.

2) Assemble your bowl(s) – empty the miso soup base & dehydrated veggie packs into the bowl(s), then toss in your scallions and corn. Don’t bother thawing the corn – it’ll melt while the noodles and eggs are cooking.

3) Get a pot of water up to a boil (don’t bother salting the water) and crack in your egg(s). If you’ve got a ladle, try scooping the yolks up gently so they don’t a) burst, b) burn, or c) get lost under the inevitable egg foam. Let the egg(s) cook until they look like hard-boiled yolks – nice and yellow. It’s ok if they still have some orange in the middle. Trust me. I hate runny eggs and it was still perfect the way it kind of melted into the soup, thickening it and making it tasty.

Conversely, if you’re vegan or allergic to eggs or whatever, skip this step. It’s not necessary. I just find it tasty.

4) Scoop your egg(s) out of the water (gently, now!) and lay it/them (gentle, gentle) on top of your pre-assembled bowl(s)

5) Now you get to watch your nice, clear water turn to something kind of scary. It’s ok. Put the ramen in. It’s going to turn purple. The ramen is going to get weird and rubbery before it softens. That’s normal. Keep an eye on your ramen, though! You don’t want it overcooked.

While it’s cooking, I try to take a few scoops of the ramen water out and add it to the miso bowl(s) to start making the soup our noodles will end up in. Your noodles will also bring water into the situation, so don’t add more than a couple scoops for now – you probably don’t want to flood the table!

6) Check your noodz – are they soft without being like overdone spaghetti? Good! Time to turn off the heat and start transferring the noodles to the bowls! Once they’re arranged and topped to your liking with your nori seaweed and/or bonito flakes and/or sesame seeds, you can ladle in some more water until your soup is at a level you like.

7) Mix it up, my friend, so all those tasty flavors can mingle!

8) In the words of Weird Al: “EAT IT!”

Now, this recipe can be used for literally any kind of ramen style noodle – you could even use this with vermicelli or rice noodles if you wanted! Just follow the instructions on your noodle packs and you should be golden :)

Alright, that should do it for this section, now here’s your Spice of the Week!

found on Google

Paprika!

This tasty spice can be added to most savory dishes for a nice, but nearly indescribable flavor. Paprika tastes like paprika – warm and comforting, sometimes smoky (if you buy smoked paprika) or sweet (if you buy sweet paprika). If you have an allergy to bell peppers, you CANNOT have paprika – it’s literally dried, ground bell pepper.

I will have a nice recipe for you all next week which uses each of your spices of the week and can be done easily, quickly, and in any quantity you like.

Now go out and Enjoy Something!!!!

Casual Gaming Saturday 3

Today's post is very late, for which I'm sorry. Life was a bit hectic this weekend, and I'm not as caught up with things as I'd like to be (I blame my bone-idleness, it's been really bad lately :P)

Game: Holyday City Reloaded
Developer: Holyday Studios
Platform: Browser-based on PC or App store/IOS

At first glance, this is a fairly bland tycoon game. It really was just a super bland tycoon game when it was first published, to be honest. I played it a year or two ago and totally forgot about it until the Reloaded version popped up on the Kongregate homepage and I took the bait. It went from a fairly boring game to a fairly interesting one in the time between when I stopped playing and when I started again!

This is an idle game, which means that you can leave it running in a tab while you're doing other things, like watching New York in 1988 rendered in the Grand Theft Auto IV engine on YouTube or typing up a blog post that's super late. The idea is basically to buy as many different businesses as you can and also to invest in the different industrial zones. From there, you earn different bonuses (Happiness modifiers from your boutiques, coffee shops, night clubs, restaurants, and hotels increase your service sector by a certain percentage, for instance), or even resources. You can get bonuses by spending energy from the power plant or food from the farms, the mine produces metal which you can use after reaching a certain level when the Port opens up, and the lab produces knowledge, which you can spend on boosts to different businesses for different effects.

After a while, the game grinds to a near halt.

At this point, you can "claim your fee", which is basically starting over with a bunch of bonuses. The game gets both easier and harder once you start claiming fees, because your buildings will produce more cash more quickly, but there are more things to do as you level up faster. You probably won't have access to the Port, Marina, Aquarium, Airport, and Island until you've claimed your fees a few times - it's kind of hard to level up sometimes.

There are a few different types of currency in the game, not counting in-game cash or resource currencies. There are the premium Holy Bars (which you never, ever have to spend money on, despite that being an option), the Event-based Coins used to hire Contract Agents (another set of boosters), Pearls (which are gained at the Port and spent on Marina items), and whatever the Event collectible is. Currently, I'm gaining golden microphones, since it's the opera event again. At one point, I think I was gaining coconuts? That sounds right.

There's a lot to this game, really, and it's hard to explain (especially with something like a 14 hour sleep deficit...) so I'll leave you fine folks with a link and a smile.

Go enjoy something!
