Survival Sunday 306: Spinach For The Unwell

In Which I Made Simple Food For Sick People

At some point in everyone's life, they get sick. Sometimes, you're not the only one who gets sick, too, so that makes feeding yourself and others pretty dang hard. That's what happened to me a twice in the last two months. First, someone I care about was sick, then I had my migraine episode last week. Today, I'll tell you how I handled both kinds of illness with food.

The first illness was marked by severe headache, fever, nausea, and a general malaise. One day of misery, then gone. The intention was to make something filling but not too potent so that the ill party wasn't going to barf.

We chose some spinach soba from our Umai Crate along with a soup base that seemed like it would be hearty enough to be worthwhile but not so strong as to upset anyone's stomach.

The broth is on the left, and yes, it's kumamoto soba

As you can see, the somen is meant to support some veggies and spice, but we couldn't do spicy that day.

It didn't have much of a green color to start with, to be honest

I prepped the noodles by measuring out the appropriate amount of water and boiling it. I should have rinsed the noodles, but we were getting pressed for time, and I just wanted to get lunch over with. If I ever got these noodles again, I'd rinse them, but they weren't too salty in the broth despite the lack of washing.

And they were a bit more green when they were done cooking, too!

Overall, the spinach soba were very much appreciated. They were filling, and the soup base was rich enough to be flavorful without being so rich as to overwhelm. The next day, we were able to appreciate the noodles more, since we weren't sick anymore, but in the moment, we were just happy to eat.

As for the migraine?

The problem with my migraine experience is this: all of my senses become extremely over...sensitive? Is there a better way to say that? Regardless, light is brighter, dark is more absolute, colors are more vivid, sounds are clearer and more robust, touch sensation is vastly increased, taste is more extreme, and scent...

Scent is horrifically powerful.

I usually love the smell of a good chicken sandwich, but one whiff of my mother's lunch sent me charging into the bathroom to abandon the three sips of coffee and two ibuprofen I'd taken earlier. But I'm not one to let a little headache and nausea get me down (it felt like my skull was imploding on top of the nausea), so I got myself situated and headed out. After gingerly nibbling some water crackers and taking more ibuprofen, I was able to take a nap and sleep the worst of the migraine and enjoy the rest of my day, but for me, migraine food is: a little caffeine, bland white foods (especially crackers), water, maybe a plain bagel with cream cheese.

The cream cheese was a stretch - it's usually a significant trigger for me - but by the time I busted in on the bagel, I was well on my way to being better.

So that was my culinary adventure recently. Some noodles, and trying not to overdo it on a migraine day. The winter is always the hardest for me, health-wise. I don't get the proper vitamins and minerals from my diet, going outside is a crapshoot for whether or not I'll be getting dampened by the clouds, and I'm always, always stressed about the state of our streets and sidewalks. This is a terrible combination.

But what about you guys? What are your go-to sick day foods?

Talk About Tuesday 306

In Which I Am Tired
So yesterday there was no blog, and I'm sorry about that. Hopefully I'll have plenty of progress to show you next week, though. This week, I had a migraine. I couldn't sleep at all on Sunday night, and by the time my eyes slid shut, the sun was shining. I finally crawled out of bed at eleven, eyes like sandpaper, body aching, head pounding. I made some coffee, I grabbed all of my blog supplies. And then I actually smelled my coffee.

Immediately, my body rebelled.

Instead of that ritual relaxation I've grown accustom to, I tensed, my stomach gurgling.

Ah, I'm too hungry, I guess? I thought to myself. But no, of course not. The pounding in my head got worse. Maybe I'm dehydrated?

Well yes, but also no. I was dehydrated, but more than that, I had me a migraine. I haven't had a proper migraine since maybe 2009? I used to get them a lot, growing up. But since I haven't had one in over a decade, I totally forgot how to act with one.

I made it through three sips of coffee before I had to dump it. Too much nausea. Head hurt too much. Couldn't really handle screens. Music was annoying.

Uh oh.

Sensitivity to sound, light, taste, and smell...

My shirt sure felt itchy, too...

Ugh. Migraine.

So no way was I crocheting or posting yesterday, but... I had plans, and I didn't want to miss out on them. I took some ibuprofen and drank some water, crawling into some clean clothes after a shower to relax my tight muscles.

By the time I got back to the living room, my mom had come home and had heated up some leftover chicken to make a sandwich.

One whiff of the chicken had me running back to the bathroom to purge my water, meds, and three sips of coffee.

A sensible person would have cancelled their plans and gone back to bed, but as anyone who knows me can attest to, I have a bitterly stubborn streak when it comes to doing what I want, regardless of how I feel.

So of course I just... took more meds, popped some Tums, washed out my water bottle and refilled it with filtered water, and actually headed out. Because I'm a moron.

Thankfully, as awful as my migraines can be (and they can be way worse than that), they don't tend to last as long as my tension or usual sleep-deprivation headaches. 8 hours was the longest I'd ever suffered with a migraine, and that was when I was about 14. This one lasted about six hours. Which is longer than I'd like, but bland food, rest, and clean water really helped a lot.

Of course, then I followed it up by watching a movie steeped in drugs, so... make of that what you will.

And that's the story of why there was no blog yesterday.

As for the next week, here's my plan:

  • Tomorrow, I'll talk about more wrestling as I wait for Cody Rhodes to be whipped by MJF on live TV
  • Thursday I'll make an art!
  • Friday I'll tell you all about a movie I watched. Maybe Hereditary...
  • Saturday I'll talk about a random game (or something...)
  • Sunday should involve spinach noodles
  • Next Monday I hope to have more done with my shrug
  • Next Tuesday will be more blather.
For anyone wondering how the novel is going... well... my main character for this section is being difficult, so I'll have to do some more work on her to get to know her better. Still, right around 4k words isn't a bad start to the second month of the year!

Today's weather, by the way, is cloudy and fairly still. It's about 35℉ (1.7℃), with 55% humidity.

I think that'll about do it for me, today.

Saturday Casual Gaming 252: Gaming When You're Sick

In Which I hate this cold so much
As so often happens after Christmas, I have caught the Crud. My head is full of gross, my lungs are full of gross, my mouth tastes like despair, and my eyes feel like they're slathered with grease and sandpaper at the same time.

Perfect time to game, right? lol.

Not exactly.

In this state I can't focus or concentrate, so no strategy, puzzle, or Sim games. My reaction times are garbage, so fighting and platformer games are out of the question. Visual Novel? Nah, can't focus. Hidden Object? No way - eyes too blurry.

And so we're left with RPGs and Idle Games. Huh. My jams.

Except most RPGs have an awful lot of decision making involved...

Idle games it is, then.

Thankfully, both Kongregate and Steam abound with idle games for free, and Android/Google are nigh-bursting at the seams with them, so I'm well covered.

I'll be placidly tapping away on NGU Idle or Clicker Heroes or Trimps or something today for sure. It's that kind of day. I had been planning to tell you about an RPG I've been dabbling in, but... man, I'm so tired.

At least with Trimps I can just let them kill themselves for me instead of making choices and doing things lol

But tomorrow, I hope I'm well enough to talk to you about noodles and other things that make me happy.

Because I'm 100% done with this cold, and I hope it's nearly done with me.
