Thursday Art Walk 244: Inktober Finale!

In Which Inktober 2019 Has Come to A Close

Happy Halloween, everyone, have some spooky arts!

"Tasty" Inktober 2019
Bread is not spooky. It's delicious. But what if... this is PUMPKIN BREAD?!?!?! SPOOOOOOOOOKYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

Or not. Lol.
"DARK" Inktober 2019

Here we see a spooky Jack-O-Lantern! I actually kinda like this one! It looks friendly but still off-putting :)
"COAT" Inktober 2019

Yes, that's a coat with a trio of long bloody gashes down the back. But whose is it? Is it Spencer's? Was he wearing it during the Romania Incident? I don't know!

"RIDE" Inktober 2019

Here we see a strange little creature, something I'll call a Minor Vexation, riding an unwitting victim and causing him distress.

"INJURED" Inktober 2019

Poor Spencer. He's got cuts on his arm, a bandage on his neck, and a six hour flight to Poughkeepsie...

"CATCH" Inktober 2019
Is... is this Reggie or Spencer? I can't tell. I'm not 100% sure who this is, but they're getting menaced by the Negative big-time.

"RIPE" Inktober 2019

This one's a bit obscure. I'm working on some mythologies for the world of Spook Patrol, and one of the locations is an orchard where supposedly a lot of witches were hanged and/or burned. Called the Witch Grove or the Black Orchard, all of the plants that grow there bear black fruit - apples, plums, peaches, pears, pumpkins, corn, everything.

The white snake biting the apple might be a witch's familiar, or it could be a vegan viper. Not sure :P

Remember my bubble art? I had to restart it :| Not getting done before midnight, either :(
Unfortunately for me, the original got kinda... chocolatey. Oops. Shouldn't have left it laying around.

Still, this gave me an opportunity to restart it with a more cohesive pattern/style. I kinda like it more now, even if the phallic imagery is still a bit obvious... ah well. That's what you're going to get when you use Cardinal Directions as your basis...

That'll about do it for me today!

Thursday Art Walk 243: More Inktober!

In Which I Has Done Art!
The Bubble Drawing is coming along, but it actually doesn't look like it right now, so I don't have any update photos on that. Suffice to say, it's slow going lol.

Inktober, however, is going really well!

"Misfit"; Inktober 2019

Here we see poor Spencer looking at himself in a dirty mirror while ghosts frolic around him. I kinda like the way the ghosts looked in the sketch better than the ink, but that's just how it goes sometimes :P

"Sling" Inktober 2019

Spencer, post-Romania, is on a bus. Or a plane. Or a train. Not sure. Regardless, he's dealing with a broken arm and bad reception.

"Tread" Inktober 2019
I think this is a post-Negative Scarlet Rose Manor, complete with a little black kitty visiting!

"Treasure" Inktober 2019
The treasures here are the Deed to the Scarlet Rose Manor, some marbles, and a very creepy dagger!

"Ghost" Inktober 2019
Yes, it's another scratched up door. I might have issues with feeling trapped.

The unfortunate ghost curled up inside this dark and airless room is one of the spirits from the Scarlet Rose Manor, an unfortunate servant named Piotr who ended up trapped in the woodshed, which was built specifically to kill anyone trapped in it. The house was designed by a madman, after all...

"Ancient" Inktober 2019

Here we see one of the appendages of the Negative, an entity residing in the Scarlet Rose Manor. No one ever sees the full body of The Negative without losing their mind, so here's just a tiny little limb. Yeah. It's that messed up.

"Dizzy" Inktober 2019
What is Spencer doing? I have no idea. He's sure dizzy, though. I think this is probably before the Romania Incident, too, since there aren't any scars on his face. Maybe this is in college when he first begins to notice that The Negative left a presence with him?

Regardless, that's this week's Inktober entries!

Hope you liked them!

Also, have another very short video of the cat:

That'll do it for me today!

Thursday Art Walk 242: Inktober Continues!

In which I show off art that I've done!
It's been quite the past two weeks! I have fourteen days of art - from the Friday before I went to Boston to today, in fact! The prompts are:
  • Freeze
  • Build
  • Husky
  • Enchanted
  • Frail
  • Swing
  • Pattern
  • Snow
  • Dragon
  • Ash
  • Overgrown
  • Legend
  • Wild
  • Ornament
I think most of these have at least something to do with Spook Patrol, too!

"Freeze"; Inktober 2019
This one doesn't have anything to do with Spook Patrol, sorry. It's just some poor wageslave trapped in a walk-in freezer. I'm pretty proud of having the imprint of his face visible on the door where he tried to scream for help!

"Build" Inktober 2019
Oh look, a book fort! Someone (probably Spencer, the main character of Spook Patrol) has built a fort of books, set up a small lantern and a "do not disturb" sign! The book there was supposed to say "A Brief History of New England Hauntings", but I ran out of time (I give myself a ten minute time limit so that I don't feel overwhelmed when I start drawing!).

"Husky" Inktober 2019
I didn't take this one at face value. I went for more "like an emptied shell" than "a real cute doggo" or "chonky" as the inspiration for this piece. Here we see Everett Lamonson, an old friend of Spencer's, hovering over his own body under a sheet in the attic of the Scarlett Rose Manor, the haunted house that starts Spencer's lifelong struggle with the supernatural. The mound in the background is a bunch of dust sheets covering the corpse of the entity that used to control the manor.

"Enchanted" Inktober 2019
Hey, look, it's Spencer again! Here he's standing outside the gates to the infamous Scarlett Rose Manor, holding onto a copy of Evangeline and the cowrie shell necklace sent to him by some mysterious stranger. What is waiting for him in the manor?

"Frail" Inktober 2019

Oof. This is a rough one. Spencer is back, but this time, he's recovering in the hospital from the Romania Incident. At some point during his job with the Spook Patrol, he is nearly killed in the field, and it's the end of his working relationship with the main crew of Spook Patrol, segueing into a story I'm calling Isle of Storms.
"Swing" Inktober 2019

More Scarlett Rose Manor stuff! Here we see the eponymous Scarlett Rose seated on a porch swing with her lady-in-waiting behind her. Scarlett here is actually named Charlotte Van Ross, and her maid's name is Emmaline. The two were very much into each other back in the day, but, uh... Emmaline was African American and a servant at that. If they'd been a man and a woman it couldn't have been allowed even then, but as two women? Their interest had to be utterly suppressed. And then they vanished on the night of Miss Charlotte's intended wedding to Sir Rupert Bertholomeu, a young English nobleman who was not entirely thrilled with the prospect of not just pulling up stakes and moving out to the US and marrying a girl he'd never met.

Interestingly enough, Sir Rupert and his servant also vanished that night...

"Pattern" Inktober 2019

Bubbles! I couldn't figure out a way to make "Pattern" relate to Spook Patrol, so I actually used the letters to plot out the centers of the bubbles :)

"Snow"; Inktober 2019
Poor Spencer. Here we see him peering out the window of the Castle Ardelean, a minor Romanian castle where he was brought to start recovering from the Romanian Incident. It's kinda hard to see, but he's got bandages on his face. He's super not-okay.

"Dragon", Inktober 2019
So, there's another story to come with Spook Patrol, and that's Isle of Storms, where Spencer ends up taking on a solo mission from the Spook Patrol. He ends up going to an abandoned island off the coast of Japan. I don't know why I think there are Komodo Dragons there, but I like the idea of him panicking and throwing his flashlight at one. Poor Spence...

"Ash" Inktober 2019
Here we see a spooky skull burning in a brazier. I think this is in Romania during the Incident. Again, poor Spence. I'm very cruel to him.

"Overgrown" Inktober 2019
One of the saddest parts of Spencer's past is his loss of both of his best friends - both Joe and Everett Lamonson were taken by the manor. Joe was killed in the yard, but Everett, his younger brother, survived and was getting ready to come to college with Spencer. The day of the pickup, Everett had vanished. Spencer found his bike outside the manor, covered in blood. The police never came to pick it up, so now it's overgrown with vines and another small tree.

"Legend" Inktober 2019
This collection of objects all relate to the Scarlett Rose Manor story. You may recognize the copy of Evangeline and the cowrie necklace. The thing with the picture of the house is Everett's three-ring binder containing the history of the house. The newspaper articles are all about people who have died or vanished in the house. The cassette recorder holds the tape that somehow drove Spencer's childhood friend Pam insane. I was going to include the VHS tape that Reggie, another one of the sextet who entered the house, had taken, but I ran out of time.

"Wild" Inktober 2019
This is a symbolic piece, I think. See, Spencer's nickname (given to him by the leader of the Spook Patrol) is "Rabbit". The host of Spook Patrol believes that Spencer is just a coward, but! Even a fearful rabbit can be dangerous if cornered. That's Spencer in a nutshell. Scared as can be, but also dangerous under the right circumstances.

"Ornament" Inktober 2019
This is a protection charm that Spencer's parents gave to him after the Romanian Incident. Spencer may be a total skeptic, but he's not going to turn down something that would make both of his parents feel better about letting him keep working. It's a Hamsa Pendant, which is something considered to be protective to both Jewish and Muslim people. The ankh is something of an insurance policy added by one of Spencer's coworker, Diva. This pendant has absolutely no magic powers, but Spencer still values it and tries to keep it on-hand at all times.

So there you have it - that's what I've been up to!!!

Thursday Art Walk 240: Bubbles and Sketchbooks!

Talkin' bout all the stuff I made!

So, it's been a long week so far, and I'm already tired, but I shall continue on!

I have finished the first three days of Inktober. I made a book. I did more bubble art. I finally managed to watch the first episode of Dynamite. It's been a good, if very busy, week :)

More bubbles!!!
The bubble project is coming along nicely, and while I'm sorry that I didn't get any better shots of it, I am really pleased that it's so far along. It's just under halfway done!

You know what I did finish this week? I made a sketchbook. I know, I've already bragged about it once this week, but now that I've used it, it bears repeating :P

My tiny, tiny hand for creepy scale...

I made the sketchbook for just one purpose: Holding my Inktober art for 2019.

Yes, I wrote the title in pencil.
Yes, I'll ink it later.

And here we see the contents, which indicate three finished drawings!
I mean, it's the third, so it stands to reason, but c'mon!

Day 1's prompt was RING, and while I wanted to make every prompt relate to Spook Patrol, I knew that wouldn't work. No one in Spook Patrol really wears rings...

So I designed a ring.

The faces of the skulls would be the same metal as the band, but the eyes would have
garnet or obsidian in them and the domes of the skulls would be made from pearls!

Day 2's theme was MINDLESS, and since I didn't have it in me yesterday to draw a zombie, I instead drew something equally mindless:

MÓ§th loves Candle...

But today's theme was BAIT, and so I present to you: Bait from the Spook Patrol.

I promise, this all makes sense in context.

There are only supposed to be four people in the photo. There are five. House '93 is an audio recording from a haunted house. The copy of Evangeline, the photo, and the necklace (which is a cowrie shell) all came from the house the recording came from. The only person who could have sent all of these is dead.

Spencer, who received this package and its vaguely sinister note, is thus drawn back to a house he swore he'd never return to. Of the six kids who went in, two are dead, one is missing, one is insane, and one is dying. The last one is Spencer, and even he is not unscathed.

So that's what I've done, art-wise, this week!

Talk About Tuesday 241

Blather commences:

Happy October 1st, everyone! It's the first day of Halloween :P

It's also a gray, drizzly day here at the Blanket Fort. It's 56℉ (~13℃) with 85% humidity. The sky is one solid gray dome against which some very confused trees are waving their branches, dotted hesitantly with fall color. The cat is asleep in a blanket fort of her own. I'm on my second cup of coffee and got my first uninterrupted 6 hours of sleep in over a week! Hooray!

Today being the first of October, it's also a very, very special day, if you're an artist.

It's the first day of Inktober, a month-long art challenge where participants draw one image a day (using ink!) based on a set of prompts!

I participated last year, but I found it difficult to keep things straight in my head because I was also covering previous years' prompts. Not so this year! I'm doing 2019's prompts, and I'm going to do them with an art project I completed this morning.

Meet Inkpad:

That's right, I made my own Inktober Sketchbook!
I've never bound a book before today, and it's not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but with a little effort and a lot of wasted string and thread, here it is. I took 20 sheets of legal size printer paper and folded them in half to form 5 different quires (and yes I looked that term up and probably still used it wrong). These were then sewn along their edges and then together to form the actual book itself. The edge was then covered in washi tape because that's what I had.

Here's what the Prompts this year are:

  1. Ring
  2. Mindless
  3. Bait
  4. Freeze
  5. Build
  6. Husky
  7. Enchanted
  8. Frail
  9. Swing
  10. Pattern
  11. Snow
  12. Dragon
  13. Ash
  14. Overgrown
  15. Legend
  16. Wild
  17. Ornament
  18. Misfit
  19. Sling
  20. Thread
  21. Treasure
  22. Ghost
  23. Ancient
  24. Dizzy
  25. Tasty
  26. Dark
  27. Coat
  28. Ride
  29. Injured
  30. Catch
  31. Ripe
I have no idea what I'm going to draw for each of these but the plan is that I'll draw each prompt, then post them on my Twitter every day before collecting the ones I've finished so far that week on Thursday (while also updating you on the bubble art!).

Aside from that, however, I'd also like to keep you up-to-date on what I'm doing this week (in addition to Inktober)
  • Tomorrow I'll be writing about AEW, the nonsense I'm hearing about with WWE, and my desperate excitement for new wrestling on TV!
  • Thursday Art Walk will be more bubbles plus three days of Inktober!
  • Filmic Friday will be about Scarface
  • Saturday Casual Gaming is proooobably going to be about a very silly Idle game I just played.
  • Survival Sunday might be something good - we'll see lol
  • Fiber Monday should be the end of our Pumpkin Spice Set, which will be nice. I already have ideas for what to make next, leading into Halloween :)
  • Next Tuesday we'll reconvene at the blog for more updates, lol

So that's the next 7 days!

If you guys have any questions or suggestions for things to do on here, please feel free to leave a comment - I promise, I don't bite, and I try very hard not to be a butthead.
