Another Writing Day!
I can explain!
I was fully prepared to write a blog today, covering my favorite gaming YouTubers of 2019 and who I've started following in 2020, but a couple of things came up.
First, I had a lovely movie date watching Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood again at my local theater, which was great, since my partner and I haven't had a chance to hang out in two days, thanks to an ice storm. It was great, and I had planned to return home afterward and do some work on today's blog.
Second, I got back and was bumming around YouTube for a bit when I was hit with some story ideas, which is why I'm using writing as my excuse, but...
Third: I... fell back into my one-time favorite online Flash-based RPG, which means that next week, you guys are gonna get the Artix Entertainment schpiel from me :P
So that's why there's no game blog today.
I'm gonna go give a character I love a potentially crippling medical condition now while murdering velociraptor-shark hybrids in another tab...

Filmic Friday 306: Hereditary
![]() |
| In Which I Have Withstood The Spooks |
A couple weeks ago, I watched a real-deal, actual-factual Horror Movie - Hereditary.
Yes, everyone already reviewed this movie.
Yes, everyone mispronounces it as "Heredity".
No, I don't care.
We had a choice between Hereditary and Midsommer, but at the last second, we chose Hereditary, and I'm glad we did.
This is a movie where you really do have to sit through the whole thing to even begin to understand it, because every part of the movie is interdependent, and nothing is random (though a lot is left to chance in the plot, but I'll get to that later...). So yeah, if you're gonna watch this movie, you really do need to watch it, or you run the risk of being confused. You're not stupid - it's a complex film. Maybe a little too complex for its own good...
Hereditary starts off as a movie about mourning and coping with loss. A mother of two has lost her own mother, and she tries burying herself in her work (she's an artist who makes miniatures) to cope with her complicated feelings. Her daughter is a bit odd, but she seems like a weird kid who just does stuff her own way. Her husband is supportive and loving and tries to take care of her and their son, who seems, like most teenagers, wrapped up in his own teenage troubles.
Then things start getting weird.
A desecrated grave, an ill-advised party, a tragedy, and an ill-advised support-group friendship drive this story from the grounded-but-strange to the downright bizarre, and, to be honest, if it weren't for the director informing us of his intentions, I would have no idea whether it was a story of a family becoming horrifically unmoored or a straight-up supernatural thriller, which is a nice headspace to be in, to be honest.
Unfortunately, the director has a very set way you're supposed to interpret the film, which I feel kinda... lessens the impact.
It also feels like two almost completely separate movies that got married halfway through, though that doesn't feel too ungainly. It feels like discovery more than disappointment. See, in the first half there's this rich family drama of people who are bad at coping trying to cope with bad stuff, but then it becomes a really well-shot, unsettling horror movie with some spectacular special effects.
I like that the effects, while gory and well-crafted, aren't used to simply shock everyone. The grisly nature of some effects is upsetting enough that they don't have to linger on the effect itself. The knowledge of what has happened is too dire to ignore.
Really, every part of the movie works well together - the sound design is eerie without being exploitative, the lighting gives the feel of the despair a family would feel on the loss of loved ones, warming only when in the presence of fire, fear, or friends, and the music is effective without being overbearing. When the music is loud, it's behaving as the audience's heartbeat, rising with the tension and action before pulling back. It's nice to have a movie where, even though everyone tends to speak quietly, you can still hear what they're saying.
And then there's the plot.
I'm about to get super spoilery, so if you want to watch the movie, stop reading this review and go watch it, then come back so I can complain about walnuts.
Did you watch it? Do you not care about spoilers? Okay, here we go.
After the grandma has been buried, someone desecrates her grave, which we learn about via a phone call to the dad. The daughter character, Charlie, has a nut allergy and may or may not (absolutely is, according to the director) be the temporary earthly vessel for grandma and her secret cult's favorite demon, Paimon. Yes. This is a secret demon cult movie. No, you don't find out for sure until the last act.
Well, in order to get Paimon out of Charlie and into her brother (who has no idea about any of this), poor Charlie has to die. We are asked, by the end of the movie, to believe that the son is invited to a party where the mom knows there will likely be drinking and/or drugs, but she insists that he take Charlie with her. The mom, at this point, knows nothing about the cult and could reasonably get a babysitter for Charlie (if not just leave her alone, she's old enough to take care of herself, it seems), so this is weird because this party? This party kills Charlie.
See, the son takes Charlie to the party, where for some reason, there are people chopping mountains of walnuts, which Charlie's deathly allergic to. The son does not notice at all and goes to smoke some weed with a girl he likes, urging Charlie to eat the cake which he doesn't know has nuts in it. Charlie, of course, has a reaction and goes to get her brother to take her to the hospital. Instead of calling an ambulance. Ambulances, newsflash, don't give a crap about the presence booze or pot when there's an obvious episode of nut-induced anaphylaxis...
So sonny boy takes Charlie to the car and drives outta there like a bat outta heck. Charlie, meanwhile, is suffocating as her throat closes, so she sticks her head out the window to breathe. There's a sudden deer in the road (a carcass, actually), which causes the son to swerve. Charlie's head is then taken off by a telephone pole.
We are, by the end of this movie, expected to believe that this entire sequence was planned by the cult for the express purpose of freeing Paimon from Charlie's body so they can literally scare the son to death and put Paimon in his body.
This is insane, obviously. Also obvious is the link between all this craziness and mental illness. This could absolutely be a story about a fantastically unfortunate family where they all go crazy one-by-one, but no. Demons.
The jump from "Charlie dies horrifically, but completely by accident" to "A crazy cult of nudist geriatrics wanted a genius demon to come into being through a weird girl and her brother" is a bit too much of a leap, for me, but it's still a really cool movie in spite of the twist.
Overall, I think this movie is incredibly worth watching and you should check it out.
Really watch it, though, because yeah... that Paimon stuff is hard to follow if you haven't been paying attention the whole time.
I'm proud of myself for only looking away during the decapitations, guys. Yeah, you read that right. There's multiple decapitations. Five, actually. One's a metaphor, though. The four physical decapitations are: Grandma's Corpse, A Dead Pigeon In A Bush, Charlie, and The Mom Via Possession/Piano Wire. The metaphysical decapitation is when the dad is killed - cutting the head from the family.
So yeah, fun, scary, cool movie.
Go watch it!

Thursday Art Walk 306: Dedbert Strikes Again
![]() |
| In Which I Have An Art For You! |
Thursdays can be a bit weird for me sometimes. Some Thursdays, I have the house to myself, waking up at 9AM and working through til noon, when I finally post my art for you guys. Other Thursdays, the house is full of people, hustle and bustle distracting me for hours (like today). Still other Thursdays find me sleepless and exhausted, desperately trying to scrape together enough brain cells to make art, despite staying up all night or sleeping past 11 and hurrying along.
Basically, Thursday's a crapshoot.
But today I have a picture for you guys! Remember how, last week, our boy Dedbert was typing away?

| "Editing Sweet"; Ballpoint pen on sketch pad; 2020 |
Well, the lil stinker actually beat me to the editing phase!
Maybe...
Hang, on, is this just him talking about that fat owl? I thought you were writing fiction, kiddo! Hey, nonfiction's pretty neat too.
Or are you gonna do a story based on her?
However things are going with that manuscript, I'm proud of him :)
And whatever you guys are working on, I'm proud of you, too.
It could be an ongoing effort to brew the best cup of coffee, a shawl you're knitting, a quilt you're sewing, a home repair you're finishing, or art or a manuscript or literally anything!
When you do the work, you should be proud of yourself, and you should know I'm proud of you, too.
Good luck out there, friends!
You've got this!

| A Brief Overview of the Past Week or So In Wrestling |
WWE:
- I'll be honest, I haven't been keeping up very well with WWE lately, but it cracks me up that someone hollered "YOWEE-WOWEE" to The Fiend during a match. I love it when fans try to pop wrestlers (making people laugh)
- I hope everyone's safe - I know there have been/are snow concerns, and since so many wrestlers are from warm states, it's a little scary to think that they maybe haven't got a lot of experience with winter driving. More reasons for company buses, even though the risk of massive talent injury if there is an accident increases the more you consolidate travel.
- If you were thinking about buying WWE stock, now's the time. Last I heard, it was in the fifty-buck-a-pop range.
- They fired their CEOs... which is triggering panic.
- The XFL is coming, and honestly, I can't wait to see it fail again. I don't like football, it's a bad idea, and honestly, the teams seem... silly.
NWA:
- These guys know how to party, yo. The latest Powerrr was fantastic. Ricky Starks is a true star, Nick Aldis is indeed a National Treasure, etc.
- For all that this is a relatively small-scale company, it rarely feels rinky-dink.
- I don't really know about Zicky Dice or whatever he's called, but he's getting there. Lots of upside to him.
- Can't wait to watch more New Japan! I've been loving how Kenta is living the dream, how Suzuki is going bananas, and how Okada is still a beast.
- I hope poor Ibushi recovers well from his illness and internal injury! Poor guy caught the flu, and the constant heaving from the flu gave him a small tear in the space between his stomach and his esophagus. He should recover well, but still, I think about him a lot, and I hope his recovery is smooth and gentle.
- Uh, speaking of Suzuki going bananas, he's going to be in a match with Orange Cassidy for some reason? The reason appears to be that Joey Janela is nuts and his Spring Break PPV is always bonkers.
- Last note: Post-wrestling Liger is precious and brings me joy
AEW:
- Speaking of Orange Cassidy and Joey Janela...
- Joey is great in his feud with Sabian/Penelope
- Orange Cassidy faced off against Tully Blanchard during Dark this week, and it was pure magic. I can't wait to see the blowoff to that feud lol
- Newsflash: Jurassic Express is flipping amazing.
- I'm not looking forward to Cody getting his lashes tonight. I get very uncomfortable during strap-beatings, because I've seen what a legit whipping can do to the human body, and the line between "too weak, looks fake" and "oh crap, you've permanently disfigured him" is extraordinarily thin.
- In better news, Taz is a glorious commentary guy for Dark, and hearing him get completely popped by Excalibur was hilarious and made me happy.
- I really hope they signed Colin Delaney, because he was great during the tag match.
- Finally: the intergender match between Team SuperBad (Sabian and Penelope) vs Kenny Omega and Riho was fantastic. It was beyond fantastic - it was brilliant storytelling, made both women look extraordinarily powerful, protected Riho without making her look unrealistically capable, and had a great sense of fun to it. If you watch Dark for any reason, do it for this match. I look forward to seeing more proper intergender matches in AEW!
That's all the wrestling news I have for companies this week, but I have a one more note:
- Congratulations to War Horse for winning the online tournament to be placed in the new RetroMania Game!
That'll about do it for me today!

Talk About Tuesday 306
![]() |
| In Which I Am Tired |
Immediately, my body rebelled.
Instead of that ritual relaxation I've grown accustom to, I tensed, my stomach gurgling.
Ah, I'm too hungry, I guess? I thought to myself. But no, of course not. The pounding in my head got worse. Maybe I'm dehydrated?
Well yes, but also no. I was dehydrated, but more than that, I had me a migraine. I haven't had a proper migraine since maybe 2009? I used to get them a lot, growing up. But since I haven't had one in over a decade, I totally forgot how to act with one.
I made it through three sips of coffee before I had to dump it. Too much nausea. Head hurt too much. Couldn't really handle screens. Music was annoying.
Uh oh.
Sensitivity to sound, light, taste, and smell...
My shirt sure felt itchy, too...
Ugh. Migraine.
So no way was I crocheting or posting yesterday, but... I had plans, and I didn't want to miss out on them. I took some ibuprofen and drank some water, crawling into some clean clothes after a shower to relax my tight muscles.
By the time I got back to the living room, my mom had come home and had heated up some leftover chicken to make a sandwich.
One whiff of the chicken had me running back to the bathroom to purge my water, meds, and three sips of coffee.
A sensible person would have cancelled their plans and gone back to bed, but as anyone who knows me can attest to, I have a bitterly stubborn streak when it comes to doing what I want, regardless of how I feel.
So of course I just... took more meds, popped some Tums, washed out my water bottle and refilled it with filtered water, and actually headed out. Because I'm a moron.
Thankfully, as awful as my migraines can be (and they can be way worse than that), they don't tend to last as long as my tension or usual sleep-deprivation headaches. 8 hours was the longest I'd ever suffered with a migraine, and that was when I was about 14. This one lasted about six hours. Which is longer than I'd like, but bland food, rest, and clean water really helped a lot.
Of course, then I followed it up by watching a movie steeped in drugs, so... make of that what you will.
And that's the story of why there was no blog yesterday.
As for the next week, here's my plan:
- Tomorrow, I'll talk about more wrestling as I wait for Cody Rhodes to be whipped by MJF on live TV
- Thursday I'll make an art!
- Friday I'll tell you all about a movie I watched. Maybe Hereditary...
- Saturday I'll talk about a random game (or something...)
- Sunday should involve spinach noodles
- Next Monday I hope to have more done with my shrug
- Next Tuesday will be more blather.
For anyone wondering how the novel is going... well... my main character for this section is being difficult, so I'll have to do some more work on her to get to know her better. Still, right around 4k words isn't a bad start to the second month of the year!
Today's weather, by the way, is cloudy and fairly still. It's about 35℉ (1.7℃), with 55% humidity.
I think that'll about do it for me, today.

Saturday Casual Gaming 305: Defender Idle: New Beginning
![]() |
| In Which I Actually Enjoy A Tower Defense Game |
Anyone who knows me knows that I'm a naturally high-stress person. I know, I tout myself as being chill, but the fact is, I'm an inert ball of anxiety 90% of the time - physically chill, mentally freaking out. I don't usually like games where it's possible to lose. I don't like my characters dying. I don't like losing progress. I hate screwing up and not being able to fix things. Life doesn't have an "Undo" button, but video games (newsflash) aren't real life, and I'm not looking for them to be.
So I usually hate Tower Defense games, because you go on for a bit, then it's game over because you didn't put your points into whatever arbitrary loadout the level wanted from you. And you take a penalty. Because you didn't know the first time you played what it was the game was looking for. Ugh.
Don't like that at all.
But that's where Idle Games creep in. See, in an Idle Tower Defense game? The goal is to die. You're not punished for dying. Dying is how you learn. Dying is how you progress.
And Defender Idle: New Beginning, from Barbasu, is a great example of how to make an engaging Idle Tower Defense Game.
This game has only existed since the end of December, 2019, so it's a little over a month old now, and I have to say - having started to play it over two weeks ago, I'm nowhere near even the mid-game. It's a very long game - especially if you're bad at paying attention like I am.
See, this game isn't gonna hold your hand from start to finish, but it also doesn't punish you. If you're confused, click around for a bit - you'll figure it out. That's good game design, folks. I like that.
Your goal is to beat various waves of enemies in several game modes while building up your base. Simple enough, right? Right! There's no twist. There's no surprises. You just. play. the game.
I'm still early enough in the gameplay that I have no idea what half of the currencies are used for, I've barely leveled up my base, and I only have three kinds of turrets, but I still feel like I'm having fun. I rarely ever devote this much time to a game where I make so little apparent progress. The secret, my friends, is that you're never actually stuck. Bored? Surrender. Take a lower prize than you would if you played to the inevitable outcome of your enemies overwhelming you, and go level up some random stuff in your base. I've literally only surrendered once, and that was because I'd put some turrets in the wrong place and completely missed that you can sell turrets because I have the eyesight of a very myopic newt.
DI:NB is not a graphics-intensive game. It has a comfortably nostalgic Atari-vibe to it (some of the enemies vaguely resemble the spaceship from the OG Galaga, for instance), but it has its own flavor. I like that the colors, while bright, aren't obnoxious, they mostly make sense - green buttons can be clicked, red ones are locked, and yellow ones are close to being unlocked (except in the Masonry building - why are the purchasable upgrades red, but the maxed-out ones yellow? That makes no sense...)
Yes, keeping track of no less than 11 different currencies/substances can be confusing, but thankfully, there's not any real crossover. You'll always use gold for tower-defense upgrades, you'll always use RP (Rebirth Points) for percentage-based upgrades (like what % of a chance you have to find a specific substance/currency when killing enemies, boost your health by x%, etc), and you'll always use "Esoteric Substance" (lol nice name) to boost your Masonry projects.
Music and gun sounds are fun, with some chiptune aspects as well as some more modern effects. It's fairly repetitive, but it's also exactly what you want from a game like DI:NB. The gun sounds are fairly standard crunchy lasergun sounds not a pewpew, but also not a bangbang, more like small, satisfying explosions.
Overall, I'd have to say that Barbasu has a real winner on their hands with DI:NB, and if you want to check it out on Kongregate, you should. The developer has indicated that the game is now in its final form, barring any unforseen bugs. My only suggestion is that you keep it opened in a separate window, rather than a separate tag, as it doesn't always run very well when you aren't actively watching it, and it doesn't seem to do much while your computer is in standby or sleep mode. If that's not the purpose of the design, then it's a bit annoying. If it is the purpose, then well played - you're demanding attention for your game.
So yeah, go play this game!
And Go Enjoy Something!
