In Which I Worked Digitally!

Today was... hot. It was about 86℉/30℃ and about 60% humidity most of the day. What's funny is that I felt... fine? Until now, when it's about 75℉/23,9℃ outside, but since I am above the kitchen, it is probably still 86℉/30℃. And if I switch my window fan to intake, I get bugs. Tomorrow's high will feel like 93℉/33,9℃, and we'll be getting rain - which I'm actually super okay with.

I quite enjoy a rainy walk in hot weather, generally.

Especially if we get some wind, too!

I'm less okay with the fact that I'll have to take my window fan out. Sounds like I'm spending a lot of time downstairs tomorrow.

But the main factor in me getting super toasty up here today was that I was on my computer, hunched over the tablet and keyboard, working on today's art!

The theme today was "WORD", and the word in question was... well... see for yourself:

"WOMBAT" digital art 2022

"WOMBAT" with background, digital art, 2022

I used Paint.net for this work, along with my XP-Pen Star G430S.

You wouldn't expect the thing that took me the longest to be that background, yet here we are, 3 hours after I started painting it!

It's because I couldn't decide what kind of background I wanted, how it should look, or how to make it.

I'm planning on making a bunch of "background images" I can copy/paste into any piece, too!

If you have any suggestions for types of backgrounds, colors, etc, I'd love to hear your ideas!

And if you want a say in what I draw or paint next week, feel free to shoot me a coffee over on Ko-Fi along with a message telling me which category you'd like to see next!

Those categories are, of course:
  • ANIMAL
  • VEGETABLE
  • MINERAL
  • LOCATION
  • GEOMETRIC
  • DEDBERT
  • WORD
I hope you liked today's WORD, and hopefully, you'll like whatever comes next! For now though, I'm going to try to get some sleep - I'm wiped and tomorrow's gonna be toasty as heck!

In Which Another Dream is Made

This week's theme was "Animal", so a huge shoutout and thank you to Z, who caffeinated today's painting into existence!

Last week, I painted some pretty diamonds that had some neat color mixing, so I decided I'd try something similar this week! Except I did that thing I do where I do Too Much all at once...

I have 7 different watercolor palettes now - my original tube paints that I de-tubed, my Emooqi palette in the black tin, my Peter Pauper Press plastic palette, my pink-tinned metallics (another gift from Z, who is too fantastic for words), my Japanese metallic/pearlescents, my brush pens, and my watercolor pencils.

So I made a list of said palettes, and I added an 8th Category - "Mix", where I'd mix colors from 2 or more palettes together.

And for each palette, there was the number of colors plus the "Mix" category for within said category.

Yeah... for someone who supposedly hates math I sure do a lot of it for art...

Anyway, I used a random number generator and picked my palettes and colors based off of that!

For an entire image.

Last time, I just had numbers 1-96 and picked from either the Peter Pauper Press (1-48) palette or the Emooqi one (49-96).

This time, I got a number between 1-8 and then from there, I determined what the combinations were.

It was... a lot of numbers. I filled a sheet of notebook paper with two columns of colors!

Speaking of Paper, I used a sheet of my larger watercolor paper cut down by 50% across the middle. I don't use this paper often because it's 1) big, 2) unwieldy, and 3) expensive, but I'm so glad I used it today - none of my other paper would've looked as nice, and frankly, even the nice Hot Pressed block I used last week would've been too small.

"Deep Jelly Dreams"; Watercolor on paper; 2022

Top Detail

Bottom Detail

This is another Dream image, and I hope some day to make a collection of Dreamscapes like this. I just really like the colors and the flow.

And yes, that's a small pink hammerhead shark sneaking out of the darkness in the bottom right corner.

I hope this piece made you smile, today. I have to say, working on it was super fun - each color, every wash and layer, was a surprise and a joy! If you've got a bunch of art supplies and you're getting stagnant on them, then I strongly recommend making a randomization table and creating based off of that!

For now though, I'll be heading off to bed. It's been a long day! If you're interested in choosing next week's theme, head over to my Ko-Fi account and send me a coffee with a message saying "Animal" "Vegetable" "Mineral" "Geometric" or "Location", depending on which category you'd like to see next!

I Sketched A Bit Today!

I would like to apologize for how late this is. Nothing I tried to do to actually put this set of images on the internet worked. I'm still trying to calm down from how absolutely awfully the upload process went (hope I didn't break my hand earlier when I hit the table because I literally could not light the image without my shadow popping through after the scanner failed for the fifteenth time)...

"The Great Indoors" sketch; 2022

These are the animatronics from the idea I had for Cooper! Each animatronic has a specific job they do, and yes, one is flipping another off. He is not around kids much, so he never had the "be nice" protocols installed lol.
"Posie"

Posie is a cottagecore opossum who is in charge of younger kids. She has first aid programming, and her pouch (she has a pouch!) is designed to hold a child up to about 100lbs in case of emergency. She wears two-piece outfits because of the pouch, but they're all incredibly frilly and quaint, and yes, she always has a flower crown. Her prehensile tail can lift anything up to 1000lbs, provided her tail can wrap around it. She's around 9'8" tall (that's around 295cm) and her favorite color is lavender!

"Teacup"

Oh Teacup. He's a short lil flying squirrel with an aviator cap and goggles and a very big attitude. Sure, he's only 3'0" (around 91cm), but he is the security system for The Great Indoors (just like he was at The Fun Zone 3000). He can move as fast as a real flying squirrel, and he is connected wirelessly to all of the video cameras. He's a lot stronger than you'd think, too, having enough strength to drag two grown adults if he had to. Teacup was only the second animatronic built, and he was never really meant to interact with the children, so he can be... rude. As rude as Teacup can be, he is excellent at his job and would defend his fellow animatronics and the guests at The Great Indoors to the death if he had to. He also likes to sneak into the daycare to nap in Posie's pouch.

"Andy"

Andy the Raccoon is quite the outdoorsman! As a 9'0" (174cm) animatronic racoon, you wouldn't really expect him to be the designated guide for Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, but that's one of his duties! He has been programmed to identify pretty much anything in nature, has a built-in GPS, and he's completely weatherproofed. He loves his job, but boy, is it exhausting, and once the kids are gone for the day, he's about as cranky as can be. He just wants to unwind and rest once his work is done. Unfortunately for Andy, his coworkers are much more social and all want to hang out with him, so he's usually grumpily going along with whatever their plans are. He and Teacup have almost a Big Brother/Bratty Little Brother relationship going on, which is funny, since Teacup is older than Andy, but despite their antagonistic behavior, Andy loves him. He just wants a nap, is all.

"Howler"

Howler is technically the newest animatronic. He's also technically the oldest animatronic. As the "switchboard operator" who monitors the wi-fi, walkie-talkies, and employee phones, he's been given a reputation as a snitch and someone you can't trust with secrets, but that isn't the case at all. This 7'6" (229cm) coyote will take your secrets to the scrapyard... so long as they don't impact the quality of life for everyone living and working at The Great Indoors. Howler has no color added to his fur, and he usually wears gray clothing, but he does have one colorful accessory - an earring with a copper feather dangling from it. The feather is from his first incarnation as a Microraptor named Buddy. Buddy had been the first, but the owner of The Fun Zone 3000 literally tore him to pieces. When Buddy's AI chip was recovered, the other animatronics secretly uploaded it to the Maintenance Mainframe in the hopes that their friend could be automatically rebuilt with the 3d printers and other manufacturing machines, but... out came Howler, who was very much Not Buddy. Where Buddy had an almost childlike approach to the world (which made sense for a greeter & receptionist!), Howler is a mature yet coy being who is always just a little ahead of the game.

I can't wait to get to write more about these guys!

How about you all? How are your creative projects coming?

That'll do it for me - the struggle to upload those images was enough to make me bonkers, so I'll just settle in for the night.

Talk About Tuesday

In Which I Am Derp

I... don't remember what I wanted to talk about today lol.

I could tell you about the weather (it got to about 45℉/7,2℃ on Sunday and was a mere 35℉/1,7℃ today), since it's been rainy and weird lately. I could tell you about the deer that have been pillaging our bird feeders, the turkeys at my grandmother's house, the 11 Mallard ducks we had in my backyard, the possibility of a bobcat in the area...

I could tell you about the art supplies I bought, the Thai food I ate, the walks I've taken, the silky feeling of Red Heart Unforgettable slipping through my fingertips as I chase a small wooden hook through loose stitches and try to turn an aquatic mammal into a hardass marsupial.

I could mention the naps not taken and the sleeps interrupted with angry winds whipping at the cracked siding across the house, the ceaseless rumble of the railway's turntable that seems to drive everyone but me crazy, the clinking click of my lamp shifting subtly that drives no one insane but me, the way I've tried to introduce my cat to the consequence of being swept into my arms if she doesn't stop clawing the woodwork next to the doors.

I could even talk about how hard it is to find pajamas that work in March (too fuzzy = too hot, not fuzzy = too cold, there is no in-between apparently), or how I need to take some expired salmon into the farthest part of the back yard so the crows may feast on it (and hopefully not invite the local seagulls who are the least grateful birds in the neighborhood).

But since I've already mentioned all of these things, now my fickle brain doesn't want to expand on them lol.

So instead, I'm going to talk about my plans for the next week or so!

I don't have anything to discuss this Wednesday, but keep an eye out for an upcoming Wednesdaymania. You can probably guess what it'll cover if you watch wrestling.

Thursday, if it goes well, should be a double-header! I have, indeed purchased yet more art supplies and will swatch them. Equally exciting, I have nearly finished that pixel art project and since it's 200 pixels by 200 pixels, you'd think it'd be exceptionally tiny, right? Well.... it's 10 pixels per centimeter, so no. It's 20x20cm. That's a little under 7.9"x7.9"! Small, but not infinitesimal, which 200pix sq sounds like lol.

I'm not 100% sure why I go pixels per cm instead of pixels per inch. Probably just because that's how someone did it in a tutorial I half paid attention to ages ago.

Again, pretty pleased with Thursday's projects!

Next Monday I really hope I can sneak out to a WalMart for that crochet thread. It's getting to the point where I'm just gonna have to break down and order it, hoping that Cardinal Red is the actual color I need...

Next Tuesday I hope I'm more focused and don't forget to post during the day lol!

That's the next week covered! I hope you'll stick around for Thursday's art post!

And Go Enjoy Something!

In Which I Have Finished The Big One

I sometimes bite off more than I can chew. In the case of my supposed "Thanksgiving" artwork... well, y'all can maybe tell it took longer than I wanted.

I'm pretty damn proud of it, though.

This has to be the largest amount of characters I've drawn in a scene in my life. I showed the sketches a couple weeks ago, and I've actually been working on this since then. My first two attempts failed because I was trying to sketch straight with colored pencil instead of regular pencil. Also, you'd think sketchbook paper would hold up better to erasing than it does...

So it's instead on my big watercolor paper.

The 11"x15" (27,9 x 38,1 cm) 140lb/300g stuff.

So yeah. It's pretty freakin huge lol!

"Anyone For Dessert?"; Colored Pencil on watercolor paper; 2021

Oh my god the detail I put into this made my hands and eyes ache but I'm very proud of myself! Each critter has their own personality, and there are some... references within (plus one very silly in-joke between my boyfriend and I, since I made this for him!).

Southern Hairy Nosed Wombat (detail); 2021

Here we see a Very Done wombat who deeply regrets asking an owl to bring dessert to a Friendsgiving with primarily herbivores. He's not surprised, not at all, but he is quite disappointed. In himself.

Groundhog (detail); 2021

Did I base this groundhog off of Chunk the Groundhog? Yes, of course I did. I love that little guy! I drew him with his trademark open-mouthed horror and butterfingers. The tomato will, of course, get scooped up momentarily. Five second rule and all that...

Beaver (detail); 2021

Nothing like nibbling on a twig and then finding out your friend has brought a horror show for dessert, eh, Mr. Beaver? He's knocked over his log chair in surprise!

Sea Otter (detail); 2021

If you know me, you know I've spent the bulk of the panini watching the livestreams of Joey the orphaned otter pup growing up. I've rendered him in watercolor pencil, cautiously stashing a clam in his shirt pocket as he wonders what this dessert thing is all about.

Lop-Eared Rabbit (detail); 2021

A few years ago, I started following Insta-famous bunny "Tato" (short for "Worried Potato") and fell in love with his floopiness. How could I resist putting an homage to the first bunny-blogger I ever followed?! Obviously, a bunny will be nervous around an owl, but now they're 100% convinced they'll be the main course next time! Don't worry, lil buddy, Dedbert's got two bunnies as adoptive brothers. You're safe!

Dedbert (detail); 2021

Here's my boy, proudly showing off the Chocolate Mouse he made. He has no idea what the fuss is about. Wait, what do you mean there's a second S? Why are you guys freaking out? This is good stuff! He hunted all night for those mice!!!

All in all, I am insanely proud of this piece, and I cannot believe how well it came out. Are there things I'd change? Yeah, of course, but being an artist always means stopping before it's "done" or you'll never finish anything.

This won't be the last time you see any of these critters, by the way. I have... plans for this month. Starting in 10 days, in fact.

Do with this information what you will.

But for now, I am exhausted and my hands smell like watercolor and wood. Good night folks!

In Which I Made Art I'm Very Proud Of!!!

I woke up late this morning. I usually get up around 9AM and do Serious Artist Things (drink too much coffee and argue with the cat before doing anything remotely like a productive task), but it rained again last night and I am still on High Alert from the Halloween Flood of 2021 so sleep wasn't really a thing last night (despite starting to doze around 11PM or so). This whole week has felt like I just couldn't get started, but when I look back, I've accomplished more than it feels like.

Today was especially rough, though, because not only did I get up later than I wanted, nothing went the way I expected it to!

Sure, I argued with the cat and made coffee, but when I sat down with my mug, Evie came stomping up to me and decided that, despite the fact that I was sideways-pretzeled on the couch, I must be sat upon. So up she hopped, but my mug was in the way of her sudden desire to sleep tucked under my chin and atop my chest like a fluffy facehugger.

I ended up wearing most of that cup of coffee and had to dislodge her before she settled in so that I could clean up.

Major bummer.

My second cup went better, though Evie was pretty mad at me and let me know by both yodeling and, more annoyingly, biting me. And of course she couldn't hop on the counter like a normal cat and bite my fingers, no.

She bit my foot.

She never bites feet, but she leaned down and took a mouthful of sock to air her fury.

She still decided that I was cuddle-material when I finally sat down after fully drinking my second cup. She tucked herself under my chin and kneaded little pinholes in my collarbone because she's an adorable little monster made of knives and cuteness.

It took until almost noon to get her off of me so I could do some chores - like pick up snacks. Unfortunately, my usual store was closed (despite multiple cars in the parking lot), so I went to the Food Service and bought bougie local chips (which are delicious, but kind of expensive) and Reese's Cups (which are delicious and not at all expensive). Also Unfortunate - the once-a-ceramic-shop storefront that has lain empty since mid-summer has now been filled with yet another "medical" marijuana dispensary.

I'm all for people combating their ills with whatever helps, but...

Come on.

If it was really a medical marijuana facility I wouldn't have been able to smell it from the church a hill and a half away. The other place in town is next to a bank and I never smell anything from them.

Pretty sure I got a contact high from that. 0/10 do not recommend. Also ended up with heartburn.

So I came home in a foul mood and probably a little toasted, but I was all ready to start doing my work...

Except I really didn't want to.

I was tired.

I was cranky.

The cat was yodeling again.

I just wanted to eat a bag of Cheez-Its and sleep.

So I ate a bag of Cheez-Its...

and zoned out.

Instead of working.

But then I realized I needed to do the damn work, so I put on my Big Artist Britches (okay, they're just a pair of plaid leggings bc all my pajamas are now in the wash) and dragged out my Good Sketchbook and my Good Watercolor Pencils and DID THE DAMN WORK!

And here it is:

"Stop, Thief!!!"; watercolor pencil on paper; 2021

Here we see a very happy groundhog escaping with a stolen pumpkin! It bounds towards freedom, not for a moment heeding the cries of dismay from the human whose edible lawn ornament has been snatched.

I want to thank my boyfriend for commissioning this one - it was so fun to draw, and even if groundhogs don't often canter like a racehorse, I love the motion it has! I am also inordinately proud of that pumpkin - it looks delightful!!!

There's one more commission to fulfill, but... that one will require quite the concerted effort on my part, as it's probably the biggest work I've ever tackled. Look forward to more updates on my Thanksgiving art in the coming week!

I think that'll do it for me today - I'm exhausted and excited and eager to rest up and start on the Big Commission tomorrow!

In Which I Show You My Sketches!

I have been busy this week (cats, trying to get the returnables returned, shopping, etc) so I haven't had a chance to properly paint or color or ink anything, but I still managed to do some sketches! These are going to eventually become finished works (well, two of them are), but before that happens, I'll have to take them from these initial sketches to proper compositions and then from there I'll make the finished art (which could also require multiple steps, depending on what I do for the medium for each).

So for now, here's what I sketched out, today:

The whole page of sketches

"Stop, Thief!"; sketch; 2021

"Thanks?giving"; sketch; 2021

"Dessert, Anyone?"; sketch; 2021

I'm not 100% sure how any of these will turn out, nor do I know if I'll be changing them up later, but I love how each one came out, even if the beaver on the right and coendou on the left of "Dessert, Anyone?" might be a bit nightmarish in sketch-form lol!

But this is why I do messy sketches like this - it allows me to assign postures, placements, and ideas to individual elements without spending too much effort and then hating it later. If I want to redraw any of these, it's not going to take the same effort as, say, reworking my logos would (though that's a potential January project...)

I haven't done an ensemble/character piece in a while! The last time I had multiple creatures was... huh... whenever the Pokemon/Dedbert crossover was! Quite a while ago! I hadn't even rediscovered watercolor yet!

I'm looking forward to all of this!

However, I'm also in that weird space where you're exhausted but you do not feel sleepy at all. Every pore of my body wants to sleep because I have a cold and I want to feel better, but... I'm also not in the mood to sleep. Maybe I'll binge some stuff lol.

Maybe I'll just relax and let my body tell my brain what to do for once?

Regardless, I hope you guys enjoyed my sketchy little sketches as much as I enjoyed sketching them!

In Which I Drew An Otter!

This week has been filled with sea life. I've been watching a few livestreams of sea creatures from manatees to seals, but the one I always come back to is Joey the Otter!

Fluffy, cute, and hilarious, this little guy is fantastic for stress relief. He just... wiggles. And squeals. And sometimes he poops. And he eats clams.

Such a cutie.

Anyway, my partner and I love to watch the lil guy wiggle around and swim in his turtle pool. So I was asked to make a piece of art that commemorates the lil fella!

"Dreamy Drift" Digital, 2020

I'll be uploading this fellow to my Redbubble, so if you like the design, head on over!

Alright, that'll be about it for me :) I think I'll work on some more art tonight, do some writing, maybe have a third cup of mocha... it's a pretty artsy day for me.

Take care of yourselves out there, folks!

Saturday Casual Gaming 246: Pocket Forest

In Which I Slide and Match Three

I like me some mobile games - especially when they're free! Pocket Forest is an offering from developer Battle Mango and available on the Google Play Store.

But it's far more complicated than it first appears!

Pocket Forest has a lot going for it. It's a match-3 game, which I love, but it's also a sliding tiles game, which means that in order to match three of the same image (dirt, grass, water; fox, tree, droplet, and up), you have to slide rows and columns until images match up. Oh, and you have limited moves with which to slide! Thankfully, tapping the groups of three or more doesn't take a move from your pool.

Now, as if that wasn't enough to keep track of just in the gameplay, tiles can interact! If you match 3 water tiles of the same level, they'll water the tiles around them! Dirt tiles will become grass tiles (which is annoying if you're trying to get more animal tiles!), tree or plant tiles (but not grass tiles) bear fruit that will automatically be fed to any directly adjacent animals, netting you extra points! I have only played the first zone and haven't filled the Bestiary yet, and I'm already addicted.

Oh, I didn't mention the Bestiary?

Yeah, there's a Bestiary!

A fairly extensive Bestiary, too!
I'm pretty sure the above image is from an older build of the game, but! It shows basically what happens.

You play your level until you run out of moves (and by the way, tiles will auto-merge if they're next to each other at the end of a level, so you can use that to your advantage!), and at the top, you'll see three stars. Each star fills as you gain points, and they represent the potential rarity of animals you'll encounter as a reward. My first animal was a sweet little fox, and one of the cool aspects of this sticker-style collection is that you get to pet the animals.

Ever wanted to pet a brown bear?

Now you can! And without getting mauled, no less!

Now, you can only pet them once, sadly... until you find a duplicate! I have my little lizard 100% petted, and it gave me a bonus!

Actually, pretty much everything nets you bonuses in this game, so if you're having a hard time in real life and you just need a win, however, small, you can almost certainly squeak one out while playing this game for less than 10 minutes. Bonuses are usually buffs for in-game (like a button which places animals on all dirt tiles available, a button to water every tile at once, and a button to plant one tree anywhere on a grassy tile), but sometimes you'll get tickets!

There are two types of tickets - normal tickets and golden tickets! I haven't had much luck with the one Golden Ticket I got - it just gave me more boosters (and once you hit 50+ of the same booster, getting more boosters is not that thrilling), but I know it can get you other things, like new skins for your tiles!

I actually wound up getting rewarded with a Cactus skin for my plants, so now my foxes eat cactus fruits when it rains! I got that as a level bonus for collecting a certain amount of animals :)

Battle Mango did a great job on this game, and it's cute and fun, so if you're looking for a feel-good game, definitely check out Pocket Forest!

Talk About Tuesday 236

Good morning internet, I've got my Big Mug of mocha, a gorgeous, partly cloudy day outside, and a handful of things to talk about. It's Talk About Tuesday once more, as it always is seven days from the last one :P

It's currently a breezy, yet kind of muggy, 67℉ (~19℃) with 80% humidity. It looks like some storm clouds might be rolling back down from the hills, but I don't know if that's just my bad eyesight mixed with the window screen. Certainly, the breeze is blowing out there.

I have wildlife updates this week! I went with my dad on a laptop replacement run one night and we saw a skunk the size of a pretty decent tomcat trundling around the neighborhood, so that's the mystery of whether there was a skunk or a really dedicated pothead outside my window solved. I also saw a giant raccoon wandering around near a friend's house the other night, but it was way more interested in the field it was waddling towards than the people wandering towards it. Our weird caramel-colored pigeon is back, too, though I still can't get decent pictures of it! Other than those sightings, it's been mostly ospreys, squirrels, and the neighbors' new chickens I've been spotting.

With September having fallen into my lap quite unexpectedly, I'm ramping up the cool-to-cold-weather garments for Fiber Monday, so be prepared to watch me whip up some sets of fingerless gloves, hats, and scarves or cowls over the next few weeks. Thankfully, most of these are pretty quick to make. Heck, I finished a single fingerless glove (except for some trim) in one sitting! The only reason I didn't add the trim was that I didn't have the yarn with me for it.

One last adventure of note - it's been pretty much the entire time we've had her that I've tried, but it wasn't until Sunday that I succeeded in getting the kitty into her harness so she could go outside! Once she realized that the harness was going nowhere and that when she wore it we wanted her outside, she was down with it, though she did the whole "flop" thing pretty much as soon as I put it on her.

Now, without further ado, I have this week's schedule for you!

  • Tomorrow will be about the preshow for AEW's All Out. I'm afraid I haven't seen the whole show yet, so I cannot review it. It would be dishonest of me to try to go by the gifs, though I'll probably talk about them (especially the one with Orange Cassidy...)
  • Thursday will have some more art and/or scripting for Sorcery con Leche, though I may also discuss my anticipation of Inktober. I may also surprise you with some early Falloween drawings. Yes, I'm one of those people for whom Halloween starts September 1st.
  • Friday, I'll tell you about one of the movies I've seen lately.
  • Saturday will probably be about a scrappy little game I've been playing on Kongregate for the last couple of days.
  • Sunday... I'm not sure about. I haven't cooked yet... We'll see :P
  • Monday will bring you my progress on a Pumpkin Spice Set. It will make sense later, I promise.
  • Next Tuesday, come on back for some more good old fashioned blather from the blabmeister: me.

And that's my next seven days planned out!

I'm still plugging away at some story ideas, and I saw a meme someone posted on Facebook about jobs in the afterlife that may have given me a game idea. I need to learn game development so I can actually make these things...

As a final note for today, guys, I have to say something.

It's really important.

Here goes:

I don't actually like pumpkin spice. I'm a cider person.

Okay, that's all!

Go Enjoy Something!!!
