In Which The Christmas Craftathon Begins

If you are someone who is making things for people for Christmas, the very latest you can begin and not lose your mind is November 1st.

Take it from someone who waits til December every year - you want to start making your gifts no later than November 1st. Save the last week before Christmas for your Wrap party, where you wrap all the gifts (if you're not wrapping as you go).

So as of seven days ago, I've actually been working on Christmas gifts every day! Will I say what all of them are? No. Some of the people who are getting these gifts have access to this blog.

I will say this, though...

I am making another tree.

I don't remember if I showed the tree I made for my mom, but if I did it's from a couple of years back, and I'm terrible at tracking things down. Regardless, it's The Christmas Forest/DROPS Extra 0-1398.

As before, I'm using neither the correct yarn weight nor the correct hook, but it's still going pretty well! I'm using a Worsted Weight yarn and a 3.75mm hook, whereas the pattern calls for roughly a DK yarn and a 3.5mm hook. I'll be using Red Heart Super Saver Jumbo in Paddy Green with flocking made from Red Heart Super Saver Metallic in White.

I don't know if I'll be weighting the bottom of this (I'll have to ask my mom, since she's the one who asked me to make this), but I found that with the one I made her, it didn't need me to do much. I just didn't overstuff it and it mostly sits straight.

This is up to about halfway around Round 19

The progress I've made was made in about an hour and a half, total. It stitches out fast, is what I'm saying. 18.5 Rounds in 1.5 hours. 10.5 rounds remain in the main body, followed by 7 rounds of bottom and 5 rounds of Flocking...

Which leaves us 22.5 rounds. If we do some math...

Uh.... I'm not that good at math.

So we'll say it'll probably take another 2-3 hours, total (not counting breaks and distractions). That's a really zippy project! Especially for something that will probably be over a foot tall!

I'd give it a try if you've got oodles of yarn you're looking to use up and also want to give a fun gift!

I think that'll about do it for me. I'm gonna work some more on the tree!

Talk About Tuesday

In Which I Had Fun!

I had a blast at this year's Independence Day celebrations with my partner, Z! We took my grandmother to the local parade and watched the band my dad plays in roll down the street on their float. The band got really creative this year lol!

Yes, that's a t-rex inflatable costume on the back of the float...

Thankfully, there was no one actually wearing the costume and standing on the back of the float because I can tell you from experience, standing on the back of a moving flatbed truck that may be moving slowly but still makes pretty quick stops is NOT easy!

Instead, it looked like my old man zip-tied the thing's limbs shut (to prevent the air escaping) and they just lashed it down to keep it from flying away. It was a big hit!

After the parade, Z and I made sure my grandma got home safely (despite her protests that she'd be fine, we wanted to be sure no one ran her over because while that road is usually quiet, it's used as a parade turnaround on the 4th!) and then went to hang out with some friends for the rest of the day!

And thank goodness they had AC because I did that thing where it doesn't matter how much shade I've stayed in or how loose, light, and natural my clothing is or how much water I've drank, I got overheated. It wasn't even particularly hot! It was probably 85℉/29,4℃ at the worst, and the humidity was very low, but I guess since I was in the sun for five whole minutes my body was in "keep all the heat" mode.

Eventually, we wandered back over to the small fair that pops up every year - it's 99% food trucks and 1% craft tents - to grab some food. Z bought a blooming onion and some fried Oreos that we shared, and honestly if you've never had either, try them! They're delicious. They're also greasy as heck, and I forgot to take any pictures of that or anything else for the rest of the day. We ate and shared with our friends, and eventually we went back to their place for another cooldown session.

On the way back, Z showed me around his town for a few minutes. That's all the time it takes to see pretty much everything of note in his hometown - bakeries, cafes, grocers, even a boxing school... they're all pretty centrally located! I'd love to move there with him. It really is lovely.

We hung out with our friends until nightfall, when we all made our way to the fairground again to lean on a homemade hotrod truck and watch the fireworks.

I didn't get home until almost 11PM, but no one was home waiting for me except my cat. My parents had gone to one of the big cities for the symphony and fireworks there! Which was fine by me - it meant that I could brush my teeth and take a cool shower late at night! I really needed it - when you're A Very Round Bird, heat gets trapped in weird places and is almost impossible to release in public. After the shower, I just went to bed.

Which was especially good for me, since I hadn't slept a wink on Sunday night! I was trying to make something for a potential blog on Monday but uh... it was pointless and I wasn't even home after 8:45AM! When on earth would I have even written it? I make no sense sometimes.

Instead, I now have a very nice beginning of a very nice granny triangle shawl. I might work on it more today, but honestly, despite sleeping for a good 9 hours, I could use another nap!

Yesterday was clear and bright and dry and breezy, but today is cloudy and the humidity is rising and it'll probably rain soon. You couldn't have two July days more different, it feels like. Except I know better because I'm pretty sure I remember a year where it was 93℉/33,9℃ with 85% humidity on the 4th and then the 5th was about 65℉/18,3℃ with 40% humidity...

I like how quiet and slow today feels. Usually, there are some dumb neighbors setting off leftover fireworks by now, but they may have already blown all their hands off or something last night. That or they're waiting for sunset, which tonight will be after 8:20PM...

There was still light at the horizon last night after 9PM! We could see the silhouette of an Osprey on its nest.

Yeah, I'm rambling. I think it's time for me to run down this week's plans:
  • If you want a say in Thursday's art, don't forget to send me a coffee on Ko-Fi with a message saying which category you want! Those categories are:
    • Animal
    • Vegetable
    • Mineral
    • Person
    • Geometric
    • Food (this one's new)
  • I don't know that I'll have a game for Saturday, but I'll keep looking! You can Ko-Fi me a message with a free pc or browser game you'd like me to check out!
  • Next Monday should result in at least 1 finished project but I'm not sure it'll be the Mystery Project aka the Mushroom Bag...
  • Next Tuesday I'll be back with more blather!
That'll about do it for me for today, guys!

Fiber Monday: With Love

Happy Valentine's Day!

I know I haven't posted in quite a while, but I'll try to explain more tomorrow :)

For today, please enjoy this heart I crocheted from Mari-Liis Lille aka Lilleliis!

It's not huge, but it's squishy and cute!

Today was a busy and romantic day for me, and I hope the rest of you also got to enjoy yourselves with your loved ones! I am exhausted and very proud that I managed to make that in only a couple of hours. If I'd thought about it more while I was making it, I could've given it some eyes and a cute lil smile, but I'm satisfied to just have a cute little heart pillow. It felt so nice to be back at making things!

Feel free to go make something from Mari-Liis Lille's patterns (she has in-depth PDFs of her patterns for sale, too!) because this one was super easy to read & understand, and I think I'd like to scroll through some other patterns of hers too!

For now, though, I think I'll crawl back into my pajamas, add another blanket to the fort (the Real-Feel out there is about -5℉/-20,6℃ I think) and call it an early night, filled with love and pastrami and joy.

Happy Valentine's everyone!

Fiber Monday - Working Towards Joy

In Which I'm Doing My Best :D

It's that time of year when everything I do or think or make or say is an effort towards making someone's holidays a little brighter, and you know as well as I do that it can be exhausting. I have been crocheting nonstop since 6:30AM and that's after about an hour of sleep because I'm a garbage human who may have serious insomnia and an addiction to really stupid YouTube videos. On the plus side, I have finished 2 whole projects - including the most mentally taxing one - and I've started on a commission I was given by a family member and... it's the size of an infant. I'm not kidding. I think I have enough fluff though, so that's not going to be a problem, and the supplies were all... uh... supplied to me.

That being said, I still have a bunch of snowflakes to finish sewing ends in on, soak in OxyClean with my Filet Crochet Panels, and starch (maybe), I have several small plushes to make, and I have no idea what I'm doing 99% of the time.

It's the most stressful time of year, folks, but it's still worth every moment of doubt and every small blister forming on the top of my pinky.

One of these days I should show you all how I crochet, because... I do not do it correctly. Everyone I see holds the hook and project in the same hand and the yarn and project in the other, but not me. Nope. For some reason, I literally cannot make it work the way I see everyone do it, so I hold the hook between my right thumb and middle finger and loop the yarn up over my ring finger like a block & tackle before running it up and over my pointer finger, using the pointer as the means for advancing the yarn.

The way I've described it makes no sense, but some day I'll show you, and you'll probably understand, even if you'll have no idea how that makes anything easier. I will say that I should probably look into a leather thimble for my pinky just based on how the yarn rubs it raw sometimes lol.

Also, I keep dozing while I write or crochet (had to rework one part of the commission four times because I kept nodding off, but now it looks 4x better than it did, so I can't quite complain.

Actually, this brings me to something I wanted to discuss with y'all about my crochet work. Since it is such a big part of my life, and since I really enjoy doing it, I was wondering if, after Christmas (it's already too late to ship anything out for the holidays with how awful the mail is backed up everywhere) anyone might be interested in commissioning anything from me? I'll work on doing some pricing on what I'm willing to do, putting together a catalog, etc, but I think that might be a good supplement to... whatever job I eventually find, and I'm already crocheting a bunch anyway, so why not?

I might get up the gumption to do art commissions, too, but I think I need a few more months practice on that. Don't want you to end up with a potato after you ask me for a dragon, after all lol!

So yeah, that's where I am today - working hard on some large pieces for Christmas!

Hope you're all crafting right along with whatever your craft is!

Thursday Art Walk: Ho Ho Huh?

In Which I have Inspiration... but not experience

I am a "by the seat of your pants" kind of artist, which means that I don't tend to go into Thursday blogs with anything resembling a plan. I basically just... draw something. Now, that's not a methodology I recommend - it's infuriating to get a better idea in the middle of a doodle and then realize "oh yeah, I have no idea how to do that!"

This week, I wanted to draw something holiday-adjacent, what with Christmas being literally 2 weeks away (gulp!). I plugged in the tablet and set to work and...

I had no idea what I was doing.

Undirected art tends to look like undirected art, and this is no exception. It at least looks like holly, but I'm going to spend the rest of today looking at other people's work on pixellated holly and try to mimic that next.

Holly 01, digital; 2020

However, you don't wanna hear me mope about not understanding how to do digital art when I still have pencils and pens in my room and could make traditional art if I tried, so I'll instead tell you what I learned from today's attempt!

  1. If you do a pencil outline first, it's easier to lay colors with the paintbrush, even if you end up having to touch things up with various brush sizes
  2. There is no function I can find in Paint.net to blend two different adjacent colors, so I'll have to plan my color rings out properly in the future!
  3. Holly leaves are a very difficult shape to render in anything approaching a realistic manner unless you take a lot of time to research, trace, practice, and then attempt them
  4. I like playing with the color shifting functions on Paint.net
  5. I really, really, really want to get better at pixel art, not so that it's "easier" or "faster" but so that I like what I produce more. I just want to be able to lay some pixels down and know that I didn't do a bad job.
  6. I think I've finally got the ratio of pixels/cm down! 10 pixels/cm seems to look good and produces a clear image!
I think that'll do it from me today, guys :)

Survival Sunday 312: Saint Paddy's Day

In Which We Discuss Holiday Dining
If you live in Boston and/or you have Celtic heritage, you know it's almost St Patrick's Day. The actual holiday is the 17th, but my family tends to celebrate on Sundays because that's when everyone's around. Today's menu is:

  • pot roast
  • potatoes, turnip, etc (root veggies)
  • biscuits served made and with Kerrygold butter
  • a delicious lemon cake with lemon curd between the layers and frosted with cream cheese frosting
But what if you have a bit of Irish in you, but you're not exactly rolling in the green? How do you celebrate St Paddy's when you can't afford fancy foods? What is a boiled dinner? What if you're like me and you don't like the whole "whiskey and Guinness" thing that this holiday seems to inevitably devolve into?

The thing is, even if you're not Irish, this holiday has come to consume your culture group, too, I'll bet, with much drinking and carousal. Which is odd, considering that it's a religious holiday for the Catholic Church, commemorating the death of the eponymous Saint Patrick, who supposedly drove the snakes from Ireland - a country with no fossil record of serpents. That's a heck of a deep clean, Pat.

St Paddy's has become a holiday to celebrate Irish heritage, hence the tidal wave of green and gold and beer and whiskey that we've all come to expect. Most people don't observe the Saint Day so much as the celebration for celebration's sake, so we'll progress from that standpoint.

So if you're on a tight budget, or if you can't get out much due to health issues or the current coronavirus concerns, then here are some ideas for you!

1. St Paddy's for Breakfast

If you're on a budget, on a timer, and/or you just aren't one for big heavy meals late in the day, then this is a good option for you. Instead of going out and spending over $20 on a corned beef roast or $50 on a brisket or something mad like that, spend under $4 for a can of corned beef hash! You take that, dump it in a nonstick skillet and fry it up until browned and/or crispy in places, serve it with eggs, hash browns, and toast with some coffee (maybe make it Irish with some Bailey's if you booze and the Bailey's flavored creamer if you don't, or skip it altogether if that sounds bleh). If you're a tea person, Irish Breakfast tea isn't too expensive, thankfully.

Bonus points if you use rye, Irish soda bread, or potato bread for your toast, and if you've got the money to splurge, then spring for some Kerrygold butter - it's worth the premium.

2. St. Paddy's for Lunch

Well, if you didn't have your beef and taters for breakfast, there's always a corned beef sandwich on some potato bread with some sliced Kerrygold cheese. Expensive? Yes. Worth it? Also yes.

If you don't have access to the good cheese, or if you're lacking corned beef, don't fret. You can just have a beef and cheddar melt of some kind and call it close enough. If you're extra creative, you can cut the sandwich to look like a shamrock or something.

3. St. Paddy's Snax
Ah lovely snacks! What do you guys think are acceptable snacks for an Irish holiday?

Cheese.

Potatoes.

Pub Snacks.

My personal suggestions? Grab some Kerrygold Dubliner cheese, some potato stix, and a tube of Utz Pub Mix and go to town while guzzling coffee or tea.

4. The Dinner
Here's where people get hung up. Everyone's all obsessed with the idea of the perfect boiled dinner, and frankly, it's not always worth it.

There are three parts to a "traditional" boiled dinner, if my mother's offerings over the last 30 years are any indication. Meat, Potato, Veggies, Bread.

Traditionally, the meat is a Corned Beef roast, which you can either roast or boil with the potato and or veg. My mother has switched to brisket in recent years, but since that was $50 minimum and enough to feed an army this year, she decided to use a more sensible pot roast. These are easy to find cooking recipes for, and if you want to go full Irish with a pot roast, then you'll want some whiskey or something. For me, I prefer things a little simpler and don't like to add alcohol to most dishes. Sorry.

As for the corned beef, if you do plan on getting one, look for a "gray cured" one, since that red color on most corned beef roasts is naught but dye and weirdness, and it's not all that good for you. My family avoids most red foods, to be honest, because they seem to cause gastric distress (ie heartburn and gas).

For your potatoes, it's up to you how you eat them. You can boil 'em, mash 'em, stick 'em in a stew... or you can chop them into chunks and roast or boil them with the rest of the veggies.

The rest of the veggies usually include cabbage (get a fan going), onion, carrot, turnip, etc. This being a March holiday, most of what people would have had available would have been root veggies. If you want to bring in the beets, then do it! If you want radish, go for it! Whatever you think would taste good with your beef, chuck it in the pot or pan and cook away.

Bread can be complicated if you let it be. If you want to go for a full-on Irish experience, then a soda bread can't be beat. If you want to make a joke, it's potato bread for you. If you're just into bread and don't particularly mind how you get it, then go for white or rye bread! But if you have a crowd and you don't want to be using a knife at the table to get the bread apart, then I suggest making your own biscuits. Rolled biscuits are easier to pull apart and butter, whereas drop biscuits are faster to make and heartier. You can serve them with butter, and if you want to make them into desert, you can add berries with whipped cream, or you can just do what my mother does and load them with butter and molasses.

If you're looking for some other desserts, then you can really go HAM here. Whatever your greedy guts desire, you can make. So long as you have the ingredients, utensils, and the time. My mom, as I've mentioned, made a lemon cake with homemade lemon curd and cream cheese frosting. It's incredible. She's also made pudding in the past, as well as custard, cookies, and a bunch of other amazing things. You really can't go wrong with dessert for St Paddy's, and that's the joy of the holiday.

It's pretty versitile.

Much like the Irish.

Anywho, that'll do it for me today!

Thursday Art Walk 251: 1950s Gray

In Which I Made More Art!

This week's prompt was "1950s, Gray", so that's what I've done. I wish I'd had more shades of gray available in my sharpies, but sadly, I only had silver and... gray. There weren't really any tones I could do, so I did my best with the design :)

"1950s Gray"; permanent marker on printer paper; 2019
Dedbert here is posing with his new guitar in front of an artificial (likely aluminum) Christmas tree that's been painted green with silver and gray baubles all over it. The topper is a 1950s Sputnik Star, which, I mean... does that make him a Commie? Oh no!

Actually, I'm surprised that the entirety of the nation didn't rebel against the very idea of Santa during this period. Guy dressed in red, breaking into your home in the middle of the night to distribute possessions gained from who knows where... sounds kinda socialist to me. Or just crazy.

But yeah, That's today's art!

I have been kind of obsessing over the idea of winter far more than the reality this year. I mean, yesterday was pretty nice - light snowfall, temperatures just below freezing, hardly any wind...

But today is brutal.

It's 11℉ (-11℃) and blowing a gale, which means that it feels like it's even colder. According to the internet, it feels like it's -13℉ (-25℃). This is nuts.

This is not what I want from mid-December. I don't even like this in mid-January when it's kinda normal.

December should be just around freezing with nighttime dips into the teens, if it must.

Ugh.

I think I'll just curl up with Dedbert in front of his fake tree and listen to him play guitar.

Come back next week to see what Dedbert got for Christmas!

Saturday Casual Gaming 250: Silver and Gold

In Which Christmas is Very, Very Commercial

My earliest memories of gambling come from my cousin's copy of Pokemon: Red for the GameBoy. The Celadon Game Center was a great place to just kick back and spam the slot machines. It was the only way to get Porygon without trading with someone, and if you lived in the middle of nowhere like I did, trading was going to be a problem.

Point is, I kinda developed a bit of a habit where I would just... play the slots until the batteries ran out or someone wanted their GameBoy back. When I got my GameBoy Color, all bets were off and I became obsessed with timing and hot machines and... I basically became a 12 year old gambling addict.

So Slot machines and I have a bit of a bad history.

That don't mean I hate 'em, though...

Thankfully, I managed to cut things a bit close this year and just played a day or so of Holiday Slots Inc by Makopaz on Kongregate.

It's a pretty easy game, too
So basically, you're trying to win gifts, which you then spend on upgrades before delivering them to children around the world. The more gifts you deliver, the more people believe in you! The more people believe in you, the more clout you have, and you can open your own toy store! The more money you earn from that, the more upgrades you can get and then...

You infiltrate Hanukkah?

Yeah. You start taking over the entire holiday season, in fact, and eventually, you become so beloved by everyone, you earn money while waiting for the holidays to roll back around.

It's a very weird game with bizarre implications, but I kinda like it lol.

I should mention that I had the Goldenrod Game Center's music playing in my head the whole time I played...

I should also mention that this is a game I'm probably never playing again after this review because I can feel the attachment growing again, and I don't want to be an adult with a gambling habit. That would be bad.

That said, if you can trust yourself with slot simulators, then definitely give this one a try!

Wednesdaymania 249: Christmas In The Squared Circle

In Which I Talk About Wrestling Gimmicks and Christmas

It's that time of year, folks, where the weather gets cooler (if you're in the northern hemisphere...) and thoughts turn to Christmas (if you celebrate it). This is a time of year for family, festivities, and...

Professional Wrestling?

ECW's December to Dismember, WCCW's Star Wars cards, to WWE's Season's Beatings, wrestling has a long and rich history of shows on or near Christmas Day.

But what of wrestlers themselves? Surely there aren't a plethora of Christmas or Winter-related gimmicks?

Well... kind of. Almost every wrestler on earth between the 1980s and today seems to have played Santa Claus at least once, but... few have well and truly made it a "gimmick". And I refuse to discuss Xanta Claus.

So this month, I'd like to talk about a few wrestlers who've had winter and/or Christmas-themed gimmicks or personas!

Today's focus is on Glacier, from WCW (and now AEW!)

Doesn't he look frickin' rad?!

Glacier, aka Raymond M Lloyd, was a martial artist who was hired by WCW to take advantage of the 1990s obsession with Mortal Kombat. Kind of obvious, yeah? I mean... you look at that photo and the similarity to SubZero is unmistakable.

But how was he in the ring?

Glacier was actually pretty alright!

Like a lot of guys with a martial arts background, he occasionally struggled to make his moves and strikes look "real" in the ring. The dude just didn't want to accidentally kill one of his opponents, and I can respect that. Also, it must've been tough to wrestle with a single contact lens in.

What Glacier is possibly best known for, however, is his insane entrance.

Lights, great music, and fake snow falling down gently into the arena all marked the coming of Glacier during his Blood Runs Cold era. WCW, to their credit, were 100% behind this man coming off as a total badass, spending nearly half a million dollars every time they used his full entrance! And on top of that insane number, that super awesome outfit he's wearing?

That cost them $35'000

You read that right.

And yes, you could probably get that from an internet propmaker today for under $1'000, depending on materials.

WCW was a madhouse. That's why people loved it!

So, yeah...

Glacier was pretty awesome, but unfortunately, his was a short-lived career in the land where The Big Boys Play (look at the adjective), and after the Blood Runs Cold gimmick died off, and his cool-looking opponents Mortis (aka Kanyon) and Wrath moved on, Glacier sold off his gimmick (in-character, which is very confusing and sounds stupid) to Kaz Hayashi and Ernest the Cat Miller.

An ignoble end to a really cool gimmick.

Yet... Glacier did not truly die!

Glacier has been seen on the Indie scene, at ROH shows, at AEW and AAA shows... even winning the NWA tag titles (pre-Billy Corgan)! So he's still around...

He just doesn't get a half-million dollar entrance and armor that could pay off my student loan debt...

That'll do it from me this week!

Thursday Art Walk 227: Happy Independence Day!

It's the 4th of July, which is, of course American Independence Day. It's a day for food, fun, friends, and stupid people losing fingers, limbs, and lives because they shouldn't be around explosives. Yes, someone, somewhere, probably nearby, is going to have a fireworks-related accident. It happens every. single. year.

But you're here for art!

Yes, he's sunburned.
Yes, he's playing with a sparkler.
Be careful, everyone celebrating!

"Sleepy Kitty"; graphite pencil on printer paper; 2019
I'll confess - I traced the outline of the kitten. Everything else? I did that freehand, but the overall outline and eye placement are traced from a video still. I use tracing to help me get proportions correct, perspective, etc. Tracing can be a good tool. I'll try a freehand kitten next time, maybe?

That's all from me today, guys.
